San Bernardino County Superintendent Ted Alejandre has announced he’ll retire at the end of his term in January 2027.
Alejandre said in a Friday, Aug. 29, news release that he would not seek re-election in June 2026 and would retire from public education after almost 40 years.
“After much thought and reflection, I have made the very difficult decision not to pursue another term so I can devote more time to my family and loved ones,” Alejandre said in the release.
Alejandre was first elected in 2014 as the county’s 34th superintendent and the first of Hispanic descent. He was reelected twice, in 2018 and 2022.
The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools office provides financial oversight to the county’s 33 school districts, services for students with disabilities and other services for most school districts.
Before taking the post, Alejandre was the county’s deputy superintendent of schools. He began his educational career in 1988 in the Rialto Unified School District and previously worked in the San Bernardino City and Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint unified school districts before being hired by the county superintendent’s office in 2008.
Alejandre served more than 34 years in active duty and reserve service with the U.S. Air Force, the release states.
He was named California Superintendent of the Year in 2022 by the Association of California School Administrators.
