The Los Angeles Football Club clinched a berth into the FIFA Club World Cup at the expense of Club América, Mexico’s most popular and successful team.
With LAFC’s tournament beginning in Atlanta against Chelsea FC on Monday, the Black & Gold went back to their vanquished foes seeking reinforcements.
Making use of a mini transfer window from June 1-10 that was specifically designed for the 32 teams competing in the $1 billion competition, LAFC has acquired 26-year-old Dutch winger Javairô Dilrosun.
During the Club World Cup play-in match May 31 at BMO Stadium versus América, which LAFC won 2-1, Dilrosun came off the bench for the 30-minute extra time period. The Amsterdam native took two shots. The first was blocked and the second was saved by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at the near post after Dilrosun ran into the box behind LAFC’s back line.
“Javairô is a player we are familiar with who has shown his talent playing in some of the top leagues in the world,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a statement. “We are excited to add a quality player like Javairô as we prepare for the unique challenge of playing in the Club World Cup.”
Givemesport.com first reported the move.
Terms of the loan, which expires July 24, include a club option to make the transfer permanent. For the time being, Dilrosun serves as a Designated Player, assuming the role left by Turkish forward Cengiz Ünder, who returns to Fenerbahçe prior to the expiration of his loan June 30.
Ünder suffered a hamstring injury in the match against América, and was expected to be unavailable for the Club World Cup group stage.
Dilrosun will occupy an international roster slot and be eligible pending receipt of his P-1 visa. The left-footed attacker, who joined América in 2024 from Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie for a reported fee of $5 million, made 52 appearances in all competitions with the Mexican side, scoring three times and adding eight assists.
A product of the youth academy at Ajax, Dilrosun moved to the Manchester City academy before signing with German club Hertha BSC in 2018. He was loaned to French club Bordeaux for a season before returning to the Netherlands with Feyenoord in 2022.
