Cal State San Bernardino President Tomás Morales announced Thursday, Aug. 21, that the upcoming school year will be his last at the helm.
Morales took over as president in August 2012 and became the campus’ first Latino leader.
His announcement came Thursday during the university’s convocation of faculty, staff and administrators, a university news release states.
In his speech, Morales discussed the challenges of the new academic year, which gets underway Monday, Aug. 25, with the start of fall semester classes.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your president,” Morales said, according to the release. “And I look forward to moving into this next year with you.”
Morales, who has led Cal State San Bernardino for 13 years, is in his 51st year in higher education.
During his tenure, the campus introduced summer and other programs to support students, created the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Board and launched the nonprofit Growing Inland Achievement to get more Inland Empire students into college, the release states. Cal State San Bernardino also generated $54 million in its first fundraising campaign and doubled the university endowment.
Before arriving in San Bernardino, Morales was president of the College of Staten Island, The City University of New York, the release states. He previously held posts at Cal Poly Pomona.
More information the process to replace Morales is expected from the California State University’s chancellor’s office, according to the release.
