Quite likely you hadn’t heard of J.J. Spaun before his come-out-of-nowhere-and-behind heroics Sunday to win the U.S. Open. But I’ll tell you this: Everyone who happened to be near a San Dimas High School golfer – past or present – on Sunday likely heard about what Spaun did. Because the Saints have known about Spaun for years, and they’ve been following closely, all the way until his 64-foot birdie putt that punctuated his fairytale Father’s Day finish at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. And “once he hit that put,” said Madison Haas, a former Saint who was home after her…

The business community, from El Monte to Downey to Perris, no longer fears the impact of federal immigration raids on workplaces. They are seeing the painful fallout firsthand. In the weeks after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ramped up their roundups of migrant workers from car washes, swap meets and hubs such as L.A.’s Flower District, business owners and city leaders say the operations are disrupting life and spreading fear in their communities. Sudden, scattered social media posts, some unconfirmed and others with video proof, detail the intense pace of some raids, with agents sweeping into parking lots…

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who cover their faces while conducting official business could face a misdemeanor charge in California under a new proposal announced Monday. The bill would require all law enforcement officials show their faces and be identifiable by their uniform, which should carry their name or other identifier. It would not apply to the National Guard or other troops and it exempts SWAT teams and officers responding to natural disasters. State Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat representing San Francisco, and State Sen. Jesse Arreguin, a Democrat representing Berkeley and Oakland, said…

EL SEGUNDO — Rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden II usually wakes up at first light, which these days in Southern California is about 5 a.m. He hasn’t adjusted to the Pacific Time Zone after living all of his life in the Eastern Time Zone, so it’s been difficult to get back to sleep in an unfamiliar hotel room. Then he’s out the door and on his bike for an 8-minute ride to the Chargers’ practice facility. Is anyone else around The Bolt at that unspeakable hour? “The security guy,” Gadsden said. It’s too early for breakfast. The locker room is empty.…

The hours of the downtown Los Angeles curfew, which has been in effect since last week due to persistent protests against immigration raids, will change starting Monday night to 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to Mayor Karen Bass. The curfew affecting the Civic Center, Chinatown, Little Tokyo and other nearby communities had been in effect nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Bass cited “successful crime prevention and suppression efforts” as the reason for the shift in the curfew’s start time. “The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and…

By SOPHIA TAREEN and DORANY PINEDA CHICAGO (AP) — To Jose Abel Garcia, a Guatemalan immigrant in the Los Angeles area, President Donald Trump’s latest promise to expand deportations in Democratic-led cities doesn’t change much. The 38-year-old garment worker said Trump’s doubling down on Democratic strongholds while pausing immigration arrests at restaurants, hotels and farms doesn’t spare workers who are simply trying to make rent. “He just talks,” Garcia said. “The raids keep happening and it’s going to be hard for him to follow through on that because he isn’t acting alone.” In recent days Trump has vowed to shift immigration enforcement away from…

NEW YORK — One of the bright spots of a forgettable weekend in Baltimore was that Luis Rengifo is finally showing signs of life. After a miserable slump for the first two months of the season, Rengifo has now collected hits in five straight games, including homering from both sides of the plate on Saturday. Rengifo’s OPS has climbed from .498 to .548 in the past five games. That’s still a long way from his .754 mark of the previous three years, but hitting coach Johnny Washington is encouraged. “This guy’s been a good major league hitter, and our job…

By NADIA LATHAN,  Associated Press/Report for America AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Juneteenth celebrations have been scaled back this year due to funding shortfalls as companies and municipalities across the country reconsider their support for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Canceled federal grants and businesses moving away from so-called brand activism have hit the bottom line of parades and other events heading into Thursday’s federal holiday, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The shrinking financial support coincides with many companies severing ties with LGBTQ celebrations for Pride this year and President Donald Trump’s efforts to squash DEI…
