California house hunters are balking at high home prices – just like their fellow Americans. The significant difference is that the rejected homes in California happen to be far more expensive than the typical U.S. house. Please forget the “buyer’s market” vs. “seller’s market” debate that’s spun by many real estate influencers. This is a “nobody’s market” – basically, nobody’s wild about this market. And the best cure would be falling home prices. Let my trusty spreadsheet explain with a review of April sales, tracked by Attom. These figures are as broad of a view of homebuying as you can…
SACRAMENTO—Years ago, I drove through a Border Patrol station along a Southern California freeway in my little sports car. As a white guy in a Navy blazer, I wasn’t surprised that the agents immediately waved me along—even as they questioned the Latino drivers around me, searched their trunks and thoroughly inspected their vehicles. I clearly didn’t the fit the profile of an illegal immigrant or Mexican drug smuggler. By contrast, one time that I flew with my mom, whose 90-year-old body has its share of metal implants, TSA agents examined her as if she might be the member of a…
By STAN CHOE AP, Business Writer NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are drifting higher on Friday in their return to trading following the Juneteenth holiday. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% in early trading and adding to its modest gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 162 points, or 0.4%, as of 9:35 am. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.6% higher. Treasury yields were also edging higher in the bond market after President Donald Trump said he will decide within two weeks whether the U.S. military will get directly involved in Israel’s fighting with Iran. The window offers the…
Q: Driving on the westbound 91 Express Lanes through Corona at sunset, or eastbound during sunrise, is very challenging due to the lane markings being obscured by tire tracks in the concrete. Apparently, someone drove in these lanes when the cement was new and it’s bad for a few miles — many tire tracks cross the lane lines and it’s hard to tell where to go at times. Are there any plans to correct this? Seems to be a fairly prominent hazard. – David Fickes, Irvine A: David, please thank your wife for (while a passenger) taking a nice photo…
If you think federal regulators care about data-driven, evidence-based policymaking, a case currently before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit will leave you scratching your head. The case involves a terrible Biden administration regulation driven by Big Labor. In defending this regulation, which mandates that crews on freight trains include at least two people, attorneys for the U.S. Department of Transportation leaned heavily not on data or evidence but on “common sense.” This, of course, is about a lot more than trains. It’s a microcosm of a much larger issue. Emotion-based regulation is a destructive way to…

LOS ANGELES — Nope, they don’t like each other. That much was fairly evident even before the ninth inning of Thursday night’s 5-3 victory for the San Diego Padres over the Dodgers. But it took all the way to the final inning of their 10-game stretch against NL West rivals for emotions that had bubbled just below the surface during the seven meetings between the Dodgers and Padres to finally boil over. The Dodgers had all but ceded a 5-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pinch-hit for Mookie Betts, Will Smith and…
PASADENA — In a matchup for first place in Group B of the FIFA Club World Cup, Brazilian club Botafogo showed that it also has the championship pedigree. Thanks to a first-half goal by Igor Jesus and some hard-nosed, dogged defending, Botafogo, the winners of the Copa Libertadores, knocked off European champion Paris Saint-Germain, 1-0, on Thursday night in front of a lively crowd of 53,699 at the Rose Bowl. “I’m really happy about the victory. We were able to play a big match against a huge opponent,” Jesus said through translation. “I think this was a historic moment. The…
By JIM VERTUNO AP Sports Writer AUSTIN, Texas — Defender Chris Richards scored with a flick of the ball off a second-half free kick to lift the United States to a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on Thursday night, sending the Americans on to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Richards tracked the ball as it flew into the box on a curving free kick from Sebastian Berhalter in the 62nd minute to tap the ball with his left foot past Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al Aquidi. The win and the 1-1 draw between Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti in Group D’s other…
An appeals court issued a ruling on Thursday evening allowing President Donald Trump to retain control of National Guard troops he sent to Los Angeles in response to protests over immigration raids. The decision halts a ruling from a lower court judge who found Trump acted illegally when he activated the soldiers over opposition from California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In its decision, the court concluded that “it is likely that the President lawfully exercised his statutory authority” in federalizing control of the guard. It also found that even if the federal government failed to notify the governor of California before…
