LOS ANGELES — One day after the Dodgers postponed a statement of support for immigrant communities in the city, the club announced a $1 million commitment of direct financial assistance on Friday for those experiencing financial hardship. The club’s statement said the funds were for those affected by “recent events in the region.” It did not mention the Department of Homeland Security’s aggressive ICE raids, particularly on the Latino community, which comprises a significant portion of the team’s fan base. The Dodgers say more efforts are forthcoming to help young people and families facing food insecurity. Mental health services and…
By JULIE CARR SMYTH COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man was arrested Thursday on allegations that he threatened and spewed antisemitic epithets at Republican U.S. Rep. Max Miller while the two were traveling on an interstate highway near Cleveland. Police in Rocky River said Feras S. Hamdan, 36, of Westlake, voluntarily turned himself in with counsel present and is awaiting an appearance in municipal court. A message was left with his lawyer seeking comment. Miller, who is Jewish, called 911 while driving on Interstate 90 on his way to work Thursday. He reported that another driver was cutting…
By ERIC OLSON AP Sports Writer OMAHA, Neb. — LSU and Coastal Carolina have met only two times previously as they enter the College World Series finals on Saturday night. Those games back in 2016 have not been forgotten. Coastal Carolina swept the Tigers on their home field in super regionals on the way to their first national championship. The Chanticleers’ opponent in the CWS finals that year was Arizona. Jay Johnson, now at LSU, was Arizona’s coach. Tigers outfielder Jake Brown was 11 years old and living in Sulphur, Louisiana, at the time, and he recalled Friday how the…
While unemployment numbers stayed the same across Los Angeles and Riverside counties in May 2025, joblessness was down in Orange County and in the Inland Empire as a whole. The 5.8% rate was above the rate of 5.7% a year ago. Total non-farm employment in Los Angeles County increased by 13,800 jobs between April and May to reach more than 4.61 million. The trade, transportation and utilities…
By COLLIN BINKLEY, AP Education Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to keep Harvard University from hosting international students, delivering the Ivy League school another victory as it challenges multiple government sanctions amid a battle with the White House. The order from U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston preserves Harvard’s ability to host foreign students while the case is decided, but it falls short of resolving all of Harvard’s legal hurdles to hosting international students. Notably, Burroughs said the federal government still has authority to review Harvard’s ability to host international students through normal…
For the second consecutive FIFA Club World Cup game, Los Angeles Football Club had its chances. Yet again, LAFC finished without a goal, this time with a bitter 1-0 defeat courtesy of Espérance de Tunis after Denis Bouanga’s penalty shot was denied in the final minutes Friday at GEODIS Park in Nashville. The loss ended the Black & Gold’s hopes of advancing four days after a 2-0 loss to Chelsea FC opened their competition. Youcef Belaili got ES Tunis on the board in the 70th minute, finally breaking through with a shot from the left between the legs of LAFC…
By KELVIN CHAN LONDON (AP) — Music streaming service Deezer said Friday that it will start flagging albums with AI-generated songs, part of its fight against streaming fraudsters. Deezer, based in Paris, is grappling with a surge in music on its platform created using artificial intelligence tools it says are being wielded to earn royalties fraudulently. The app will display an on-screen label warning about “AI-generated content” and notify listeners that some tracks on an album were created with song generators. Deezer is a small player in music streaming, which is dominated by Spotify, Amazon and Apple, but the company…

By WILL WEISSERT WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Friday that his director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, was “wrong” when she previously said that the U.S. believed Iran wasn’t building a nuclear weapon, and he suggested that it would be “very hard to stop” Israel’s strikes on Iran in order to negotiate a possible ceasefire. Trump has recently taken a more aggressive public stance toward Tehran as he’s sought more time to weigh whether to attack Iran by striking its well-defended Fordo uranium enrichment facility. Buried under a mountain, the facility is believed to be out of the…
The world according to Jim: • It has taken long enough – way, way too long, actually – for the Dodgers to take a stand, make a statement, and have their community’s back in light of the events of the last two weeks in L.A., especially given the makeup of their fan base. … • Consider this from Orel Hershiser a couple of weeks ago, as told to former Cleveland Indians teammate Carlos Baerga on his podcast and reported by the Dodgers Nation fan site: “I think the Dodgers crowds are the way they are because we have such a…
