LOS ANGELES — Wrung out from spent emotions and bruised from wayward pitches a day earlier, the Dodgers still found the strength for a Friday night rally. Winning three of four games from the San Diego Padres during the week, in a tension-filled series that closed with a benches-clearing incident, came with a price. Outside of the physical challenges in a series opener against the Washington Nationals, was a day without Manager Dave Roberts, who was suspended one game for his on-field clash with Padres manager Mike Shildt on Thursday night when finger pointing was the chosen form of aggression.…

By LISA MASCARO, AP Congressional Correspondent WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans suffered a sizable setback Friday on one key aspect of President Donald Trump’s big bill after their plans to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other provisions from the Senate Banking Committee ran into procedural violations with the Senate parliamentarian. Republicans in the Senate proposed zeroing-out funding for the CFPB, the landmark agency set up in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, to save $6.4 billion. The bureau had been designed as a way to better protect Americans from financial fraud, but has been opposed by many GOP lawmakers since its inception. The Trump…

The victory secured a sixth consecutive win for Kansas City, which remained atop the NWSL standings. The Current (11-2-0, 33 points) are 6-0-0 at home this season and haven’t dropped a game at home since a July 2024 loss to Orlando. With the score tied 0-0, Lorena leaped to…

By LINDSAY WHITEHURST WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal from an Illinois toy company pushing for a quick decision on the legality of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Learning Resources Inc. had asked the justices to take up the case soon, rather than let it continue to play out in lower courts. The company argues the tariffs and uncertainty are having a “massive impact” on businesses around the country and the issue needs swift attention from the nation’s highest court. The justices didn’t explain their reasoning in the brief order rebuffing the appeal, but the Supreme…

LOS ANGELES — One day after the Dodgers postponed a statement of support for immigrant communities in the city, the club announced a $1 million commitment of direct financial assistance on Friday for those experiencing financial hardship. The club’s statement said the funds were for those affected by “recent events in the region.” It did not mention the Department of Homeland Security’s aggressive ICE raids, particularly on the Latino community, which comprises a significant portion of the team’s fan base. The Dodgers say more efforts are forthcoming to help young people and families facing food insecurity. Mental health services and…

By COLLIN BINKLEY, AP Education Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to keep Harvard University from hosting international students, delivering the Ivy League school another victory as it challenges multiple government sanctions amid a battle with the White House. The order from U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston preserves Harvard’s ability to host foreign students while the case is decided, but it falls short of resolving all of Harvard’s legal hurdles to hosting international students. Notably, Burroughs said the federal government still has authority to review Harvard’s ability to host international students through normal…
