ANAHEIM — Yoán Moncada was supposed to be back by now. Not only is the Angels’ third baseman still on the injured list, but the slow progress is eating at him. “Honestly, I feel very frustrated,” Moncada said through an interpreter on Saturday. “I feel very low energy because of this. I want to play and I’m going to keep doing my thing so I can get better as quick as I can.” Moncada has been bothered by a sore right knee for just over three weeks. For the first few days of the injury, he tried to play through…
Following the bombshell news that Dodgers controlling owner Mark Walter had purchased the majority share of the Lakers, with a $10 billion valuation, I was reminded of a text I’d received from a longtime friend a few months ago regarding the Dodgers’ team-building methods (and I’m reprinting it with his permission): “I think that the Dodgers aren’t doing anything more than what Dr. Jerry Buss did in building the Showtime Lakers and that was a savior for the NBA.” Chances are, then, that the incoming Lakers ownership will be operating with a familiar blueprint, albeit one modernized to fit the…
OKLAHOMA CITY — It started with 30 teams, most of them fairly optimistic about their chances when the season began eight months and 1,320 games and 35,543 3-pointers and 299,608 points ago. Only two teams remain. For one game. Game 7. The NBA season ends Sunday night when the Indiana Pacers visit the Oklahoma City Thunder to decide which team will hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy, take over for the Boston Celtics as champions and become the league’s seventh different title winner in the last seven years. It’s the first winner-take-all game in the NBA since 2016, when Cleveland beat…
The City of Pasadena canceled all programming scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at Villa Parke, Robinson Park, and Victory Park after reports of apparent federal enforcement activity at Villa Parke, officials said. The decision was made out of an “abundance of caution,” city officials said in a news release posted on Instagram, after social media posts appeared to show federal agents at Villa Parke that morning. Canceled activities include swim lessons and other recreational programs. Witnesses at Villa Parke on Saturday morning described a large unmarked SUV and another, darker car that pulled up in front of a tamale stand…
An Irvine dog trainer and his girlfriend were arrested on Thursday, June 19 after police discovered at least 10 dogs had died while in the couple’s care, police said. A pet owner contacted police on Wednesday evening to report that they received a message from their dog trainer that their dog had died in its sleep and was cremated. Irvine police’s Animal Services Unit discovered that at least 10 dogs had died in the trainer’s care. The trainer, Kwong “Tony” Chun Sit, 53, of Irvine, and his girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, 23, of Vista, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty…
Really, you have to start out with the cops. Because police officers in their interactions with a ginned-up crowd are the most identifiable players in the game. Might as well have targets on their backs, and fronts. The uniforms. The big fade haircuts. Made them vulnerable during the recent days-long demos in downtown Los Angeles, when everyone was a bit angry, bit worn out, bit hangry. Vulnerable except for, you know, the horses, the guns, rubber bullets, foam grenades, bullet-bullets. Levels the old playing field. Anyway, you don’t like to see the big guys get hurt, and you like to…
On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s Senate Bill 1, a law that bans healthcare providers from “prescribing, administering, or dispensing” medical treatments for minors if the purpose is to enable the child to identify or live as “a purported identity inconsistent with the minor’s biological sex.” Confusingly, this is the actual holding by the 6-3 majority in the case, United States v. Skrmetti: “Tennessee’s law prohibiting certain medical treatments for transgender minors is not subject to heightened scrutiny under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and satisfies rational basis review.” You won’t find the words “heightened…
By Nada Hassanein, Stateline.org More American children and teens die from firearms than any other cause, but there are more deaths — and wider racial disparities — in states with more permissive gun policies, according to a new study. The study, published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics on June 9, analyzes trends in state firearm policies and kids’ deaths since 2010, after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in McDonald v. City of Chicago. The ruling struck down the city’s handgun ban, clearing the way for many states to make it easier for people to buy and carry guns. The study authors…
They say everyone has a book in them. Mine has been rattling around for over a decade, occasionally tapping on the inside of my skull and whispering, “It’s time.” Well, that time has finally arrived. Yes, folks, I’ve embarked on a project that more than a few of you have encouraged for years: I’m writing a book. There. I said it. Some of my peers have chuckled knowingly and offered congratulations. Others have asked, “What took you so long?” And a few have raised eyebrows and muttered, “After all, that’s what old guys do.” I’ll admit, I resemble that remark.…
ANAHEIM — Christian Moore fulfilled a childhood dream this week when the New York City native got to play in Yankee Stadium for the first time, but the rookie second baseman’s Angel Stadium debut on Friday night was far more memorable. Moore, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Tennessee, hit his first major-league home run, a game-tying solo shot to center field in the seventh inning, and preserved that tie with a superb diving catch of Yainer Diaz’s 109-mph line drive with two runners on to end the top of the eighth. Moore had a chance…
