By CHRISTINE FERNANDO CHICAGO (AP) — Many of the protesters who flooded the streets of Los Angeles to oppose President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown wore masks or other face coverings, drawing scorn from him. “MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests,” Trump posted on his social media platform, adding that mask-wearing protesters should be arrested. Protesters and their supporters argue Trump’s comments and repeated calls by the Republican president’s allies to ban masks at protests are an attempt to stifle popular dissent. They also note a double standard at play: In Los Angeles and elsewhere, protesters were…

LOS ANGELES JIM’s CEO and star player, John Duff, stood at the three-point line, hands raised, frustration etched across his face. Down one with just over two minutes left, he waited for a pass that never came. A missed shot sent his team scrambling back on defense. He waited on offense instead. Ten seconds later, the ball did find his corner. He immediately let it fly. Duff was heading back the other direction, celebrating before it even went in. Considering that shot became his fourth three-point make in the last five minutes, the earlier frustration might have been warranted. A…
OKLAHOMA CITY — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished off his MVP season with 29 points and 12 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder won the NBA championship, pulling away in the second half to beat the Indiana Pacers 103-91 on Sunday night. Jalen Williams scored 20 and Chet Holmgren had 18 for the Thunder, who were pushed to a Game 7 brink in the NBA Finals — but finished off a season for the ages. Oklahoma City won 84 games between the regular season and the playoffs, tying the 1996-97 Chicago Bulls for third-most in any season. Only Golden State (88 in…
LOS ANGELES — For the Dodger fans who couldn’t believe their eyes the first time, we had a second unicorn sighting at the ballpark Sunday afternoon. I witnessed it before the Dodgers’ woke-up-with-a-jolt 13-7 victory over the Washington Nationals, hundreds of fans coaxing the mythical two-way ballplayer back into action with their cell phones, on and recording from the stands near the left-field bullpen. “It’s a crazy thing that he’s playing for the team I support,” said Maximus Aldaz, a 24-year-old fan who drove down from Clovis to catch Shohei Ohtani’s second start – and second inning of work –…

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hall of Fame horse racing trainer D. Wayne Lukas has been hospitalized and will not return to training, his family and Churchill Downs announced Sunday. Lukas’ family said the 89-year-old has battled a severe MRSA blood infection that has caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened preexisting chronic conditions. The family said Lukas declined an aggressive treatment plan that doctors proposed involving multiple surgeries over the coming months and 24/7 assistance, instead deciding to return home. His horses have been transferred to assistant trainer Sebastian “Bas” Nicholl, who has been part of Lukas’…
LOS ANGELES — They clustered around the railings above the Dodgers’ bullpen long before the opening pitch Sunday afternoon, standing five, 10 and maybe 15 deep in some places. All so they could catch a glimpse of Shohei Ohtani’s warmup tosses before he faced the Washington Nationals. Dodgers fans roared when Ohtani took the mound for his second start of 2025. They roared again when he departed after striking out two during one scoreless inning of work during an eventual 13-7 victory over the Nationals. He didn’t give up a run and he didn’t top 100 mph, as he did…
LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani took his customary spot atop the Dodgers’ batting order for their game Sunday afternoon against the Washington Nationals. But it might not be long before he drops in the order on the days or nights he assumes his additional role as one of their starting pitchers. Manager Dave Roberts said he approached Ohtani after his first start after a two-year layoff following elbow surgery if he wished to remain as a leadoff hitter, and Ohtani told him “he was completely fine with it.” It wasn’t a fatigue thing or anything like that, but it was…
