LOS ANGELES — The Lakers entered their first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a specific game plan for how to defend Anthony Edwards. And it’s worked through the first two games of the best-of-seven series, which is tied 1-1 after the Lakers’ Game 2 win on Tuesday night, with the All-NBA guard admitting that how the Lakers have defended him has been confusing. “I don’t know – it seemed like every time I caught the ball, [the Lakers] kind of went into a zone in a sense,” Edwards responded when asked about the Timberwolves’ lack of ball and…
ATLANTA (AP) — The pastor of a Georgia megachurch who led a nationwide 40-day “fast” boycott of Target stores over the retail chain’s commitment to diversity initiatives is now calling for that effort to continue as a “full Target boycott.” The Rev. Jamal Bryant said this week that the Minneapolis-based retailer has not met all of the boycott effort’s demands. Among them: Restoring its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion principles and pledging money to Black-owned banks and businesses. Target announced in January that it would phase out a handful of DEI initiatives, including a program designed to help Black…
Dick Durbin, whose tenure as one of Illinois’ longest serving U.S. senators has also been a testament to the power of seniority in the chamber, announced Wednesday he would not seek a sixth term next year, setting up a scramble among potential successors vying for a politically coveted six-year term. “The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator. But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch. So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end…
At the closing bell for Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window, the Los Angeles Football Club added depth to the middle of the park. Seeking to fight off fatigue from setting in for a trio of heavily used midfielders who have each played in more than 80% of LAFC’s 15 matches, LAFC brought in reinforcements Frankie Amaya and Ryan Raposo to its roster Wednesday. Amaya and Raposo, the ninth and 10th inbound moves for LAFC this season, offer head coach Steve Cherundolo additional pieces he can deploy before stepping down from the role when his fourth and final season with…
As the federal government threatens funding cuts over school diversity programs, California says it already complies with federal law and that the Trump administration’s actions are illegal. Meanwhile, many Southern California school districts are echoing the state’s stance, with some saying they never received a letter from federal officials. Thursday, April 24, is the deadline from the U.S. Department of Education for K-12 districts to certify they are complying with the federal interpretation of Title VI or risk losing federal funding. Title VI is part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that bars discrimination based on race, color or national origin.…
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is putting his “touches” on the White House with new flagpoles, new artwork, a complete redecoration of the Oval Office and possibly covering up the lawn in the Rose Garden. Trump, a former real estate developer and hotelier, said Wednesday that he’s adding two “beautiful” flagpoles to the grounds to fly the American flag “in about a week or so.” The Republican president recently hung new artworks featuring himself, including a rendering of him with his fist raised after last year’s attempted assassination in Pennsylvania. He has spruced up the Oval…
As they spoke during a news conference last week, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz and assistant GM Chad Alexander smiled and smiled and smiled some more. The NFL draft was a week away and, clearly, they couldn’t wait, counting the hours and days until they could make their picks. How the draft might unfold Thursday, Friday and Saturday is anybody’s guess. Hortiz and Alexander could guess, of course, but even they couldn’t be certain. Plus, they could trade up or down, swapping selections with another team during the draft, if someone made an offer they couldn’t refuse. What was for…
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — The world’s biggest corporations have caused $28 trillion in climate damage, a new study estimates as part of an effort to make it easier for people and governments to hold companies financially accountable, like the tobacco giants have been. A Dartmouth College research team came up with the estimated pollution caused by 111 companies, with more than half of the total dollar figure coming from 10 fossil fuel providers: Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, National Iranian Oil Co., Pemex, Coal India and the British Coal Corporation. For comparison, $28…
A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of abusing a dog in Long Beach earlier this week — an attack that was captured on video and went viral after it was shared on social media, authorities said. Long Beach police on Tuesday night, April 22, arrested the suspect in the 800 block of Pine Avenue. The tan dog with floppy ears was rescued and taken to Long Beach Animal Care Services. Police said they plan to share updates on the dog’s condition “when appropriate, as the investigation remains ongoing.” The man in the video, who had a skateboard and a…
By LARRY NEUMEISTER, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — A dozen states sued the Trump administration in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York on Wednesday to stop its tariff policy, saying it is unlawful and has brought chaos to the American economy. The lawsuit said the policy put in place by President Donald Trump has left the national trade policy subject to Trump’s “whims rather than the sound exercise of lawful authority.” It challenged Trump’s claim that he could arbitrarily impose tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The suit asks the court to declare…
