When Christian Pulisic, currently considered this country’s best soccer player, declined to play for the U.S. Men’s National team in the current CONCACAF Gold Cup and then engaged in a long-distance wars of words both with current national team coach Mauricio Pochettino and with Landon Donovan – who was American soccer’s GOAT before Pulisic – lots of people seemed to miss the point. (And there was some severe irony hidden in that above paragraph. We’ll get to that.) No, Pulisic is not being a prima donna. He is part of the collateral damage from a worldwide soccer calendar that has…

For decades, presidents have disregarded Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution and engaged in warmaking around the world without bothering to get authorization from Congress. To make matters worse, members of Congress fearful of having to cast tough votes have been more than happy to allow this usurpation of authority occur. It’s one less tough decision for them. These pages have been consistent on the need for congressional authorization for acts of war. These editorial pages repeatedly called on the Obama administration to seek congressional approval for its actions against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.…

By CALEIGH WELLS TWINSBURG, Ohio (AP) — When Judy Sautner recently walked into Power Appliance, a store in a southeastern suburb of Cleveland, she had one goal in mind: replace her daughter’s broken dryer with something that worked and didn’t break the bank. “I wasn’t really worried about all the bells and whistles,” said Sautner. Jay Buchanan, the store’s owner, said many customers are like Sautner, and what they are looking for frequently ends up being an appliance with the Energy Star symbol. The U.S.-based program claims that its blue seal of approval on efficient appliances saves households an average…

By LEAH ASKARINAM and JOEY CAPPELLETTI WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump isn’t the first president to order military strikes without congressional approval. But his decision to bomb Iran comes at a uniquely volatile moment — both at home and abroad. Overseas, the U.S. risks deeper entanglement in the Middle East if fighting erupts again between Israel and Iran. At home, Trump continues to sidestep oversight, showing little regard for checks and balances. His move has reignited a decades-old debate over the War Powers Act, a law passed in the early 1970s meant to divide authority over military action between Congress…

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices are dropping further, and stocks are rallying worldwide Tuesday on hopes that Israel’s war with Iran will not damage the global flow of crude, even if a tentative truce seemed to fray under fire in the morning. The S&P 500 was 0.7% higher in early trading, following up on even bigger gains for stocks across Europe and Asia, after President Donald Trump said late Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 289 points, or 0.7%, as of 9:31 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite…

ANAHEIM —Plate discipline is certainly a topic the Angels have been discussing all year, but perhaps they finally found the magic words to get them to execute it. Acting manager Ray Montgomery said the Angels’ 11-walk performance in their 9-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night followed a conversation among the hitters about their approach at the plate. “Being patient,” Montgomery said. “Making the other guys work. Obviously, it’s something you try to do and not give up being aggressive. But in the same breath, they did a great job.” The Angels drew four walks and they…

President Trump’s decision to order airstrikes on Iran’s three most important nuclear facilities – Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan – represents a defining moment, not just in his political legacy, but for global peace and security. While it will take days – or weeks – to determine just how long these strikes set back Iran’s nuclear ambitions, there should be no doubt that “Operation Midnight Hammer” was the correct decision. This is even more correct if the totality of Iran’s retaliation amounts to a performative barrage of missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq, a barrage which Iran reportedly warned…

ANAHEIM — The arrival of Kevin Newman’s third child opened the door for Kyren Paris to get back to the big leagues. He’s still got some work to do in order to earn a longer stay with the Angels. Paris, who figures to be in the major leagues for two or three days while Newman is on the paternity list, was hitting .188 with a .703 OPS in 23 games at Triple-A since he was demoted last month. Paris said he’s been working on “being on time, more consistent, getting pitches early in the count and making sure I put…

As tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue, a dozen House Democrats, who are all veterans, sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Monday, June 23, imploring the president to involve both Congress and the American public more in conversations before any further military escalations. The lawmakers said they were reminding the president that only Congress has the power to declare war and expressing support for a war powers resolution that would compel Trump to secure congressional approval before the U.S. takes any other military action against Iran. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated since Trump ordered…
