SEATTLE — The Angels remain mired in a frustrating offensive funk. In an era when hitting is already so tough that the major league average is .240, the Angels would gladly take that instead of what they’ve been doing. The Angels reached Monday’s off day hitting .212, second worst in the majors. Their .655 OPS ranks 25th. It’s been even worse over the past 15 games: a .188 average and a .553 OPS. The recent stretch, in which their record is 4-11, has also seen them strike out once every three plate appearances. Manager Ron Washington has few answers each…
The Trump administration is quickly implementing its immigration agenda, which far exceeds deporting illegal immigrant criminals. Recently, the administration has begun revoking the legal status of foreign students en masse, in a move that may end up sabotaging American businesses in the long term. There are more than 1500 known cases of foreign student legal status being revoked at this point, with apparently little to no explanation given. Lawsuits have ensued, and some attorneys claim that these students are not criminal, nor have participated in pro-Hamas protests that so concern the administration, nor pose any sort of security risk for…

California is the nation’s second-hardest state to find a homeowner. My trusty spreadsheet reviewed homeownership stats from the Census Bureau for the 50 states back to 1988. The numbers show little return on decades of incentives to get Americans to live in a home they own. California is a prime example of what didn’t work. It had an average 55% of its households living in a home they own in 2022 through 2024. Only New York, at 53%, had less ownership. After California, Hawaii was at 60% and Nevada at 61%. Nationally, 69% own their residence. Tops? West Virginia at…
Two 17-year-olds were ejected from an allegedly stolen car after a pursuit on the 91 Freeway ended when the car crashed and flipped off a freeway ramp, landing in a 24 Hour Fitness parking lot, authorities said. The pursuit began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, when officers saw a car stolen out of Corona near Columbia Avenue and the 215 Freeway, in the north end of Riverside, police said. Additional officers were called and police waited for backup before they attempted to pull the car over. The driver failed to stop and a short pursuit began on the…
By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Romano spent more than 17 years at the Justice Department, eventually becoming a supervisor on the team that would prosecute more than 1,500 people charged in the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The moment he watched the largest investigation in department history get wiped away with the stroke of a pen — on President Donald Trump’s first day back in the White House — Romano knew he had to leave. “I knew on January 20th, when the pardons were announced, that I needed to find my way out,” Romano said in an…

Sometimes you just have to shake your head over what goes on in the California Legislature. The latest dive into unreality is Assembly Bill 569, by Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, D-San Francisco. It would gut the California Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013, the signature fiscal achievement of Gov. Jerry Brown. PEPRA affected the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, which is the nation’s largest public pension fund and serves more than 2 million state and local government employees. To deal with runaway pension costs, among other things PEPRA ended the “pension spiking” that began a decade earlier, raised retirement ages…
When Rialto Unified school board member Edgar Montes apologized recently for his “inadvertent” vote to hire his mother for a district job, in violation of board bylaws, he neglected to mention that he had done it before. The issue first came to light a day after Montes’ mother, Maria Montes Torres, resigned April 16 from the position she held as a part-time cafeteria worker amid a Southern California News Group inquiry into her hiring. In a statement the next day, Edgar Montes acknowledged his mother stepped down after it was revealed he had voted to hire her on Aug. 10,…
Light rain is expected to sprinkle over Southern California on Saturday, April 26, but a light, quick shower will make way for mostly dry conditions by the end of the weekend, National Weather Service forecasters said Friday. A storm descending from northern California was expected to hit Los Angeles County by Saturday morning, bringing about a quarter-inch of rain to most areas until about 1 or 2 p.m., followed by possible scattered showers, Meteorologist Mike Wofford said. Orange County and the Inland Empire would be hit later, with the possibility of some drizzle in the morning before an anticipated tenth-of-an-inch…
