Californians are battling a cost-of-living crisis, largely because our leaders in Sacramento have never met a tax or regulation they didn’t like. Golden State drivers are currently paying $4.90 per gallon, 50% more than the national average, to fill up their vehicles. We have the second-most expensive residential electricity prices in the nation. Our housing costs are the most expensive in the continental United States. And we have the highest marginal state income and sales taxes in the nation. And now, Washington politics are about to poke another hole in Californians’ pockets. The Trump administration recently announced its plans to impose tariffs…
By DEE-ANN DURBIN There will soon be a doughnut-sized hole in McDonald’s U.S. menu. McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme said Tuesday that they’re ending their partnership on July 2, a little more than a year after it was announced. Krispy Kreme said demand for its doughnuts at McDonald’s wasn’t strong enough to recoup its costs. Chicago-based McDonald’s announced in March 2024 that it would begin selling three types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts at participating locations after a successful pilot in Kentucky. The doughnuts were sold individually or in boxes of six. The companies planned a phased rollout that would bring doughnuts…
By MICHAEL CASEY, Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — Attorneys general from more than 20 states and Washington, D.C. filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging billions of dollars in funding cuts made by the Trump administration that would fund everything from crime prevention to food security to scientific research. The lawsuit filed in Boston is asking a judge to limit the Trump administration from relying on an obscure clause in the federal regulation to cut grants that don’t align with its priorities. Since January, the lawsuit argues that the administration has used that clause to cancel entire programs and thousands of…

By MATT OTT, AP Business Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans’ view of the U.S. economy worsened in June, resuming a downward slide that had dragged consumer confidence to its lowest level since the COVID-19 pandemic five years ago. The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index slid to 93 in June, down 5.4 points from 98.4 last month, which represented a brief uptick. The regression surprised economists, who had expected a small uptick this month. In April, American consumers’ confidence in the economy sank to its lowest reading since May 2020, largely due to anxiety over the impact of…
By CHRIS MEGERIAN, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump wanted the brief and explosive American intervention in the Middle East to end with the satisfying tidiness of a prime-time season finale. After days of stoking suspense over whether he would help Israel’s attacks on Iran, followed by a spectacular bombing mission against nuclear facilities, he announced a surprise ceasefire deal to bring the war to a close. Trump even gave the conflict a definitive name — “THE 12 DAY WAR” — leaving no doubt that he viewed the storyline as complete. Now the question is whether the rest…
Breakfast lovers got a bit of good news Tuesday with an announcement by Los Angeles’ Langer’s Deli that it is dropping a 50-cent surcharge it imposed on eggs earlier this year. The 50-cent-per-egg charge was enacted in February when egg prices skyrocketed across the country, thanks largely to bird flu and other supply chain issues. Langer’s Deli in LA’s Westlake District announced Tuesday, June 24,2025, that it is removing a 50-cent egg surcharge that it implemented in February when egg prices were soaring. By MATTHEW DALY, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A plan to sell more than 2 million acres of federal lands has been ruled out of Republicans’ big tax and spending cut bill after the Senate parliamentarian determined the proposal by Senate Energy Chairman Mike Lee would violate the chamber’s rules. Lee, a Utah Republican, has proposed selling public lands in the West to states or other entities for use as housing or infrastructure. The plan would revive a longtime ambition of Western conservatives to cede lands to local control after a similar proposal failed in the House earlier this year.…
Ace Bailey has been pegged as a can’t-miss prospect, an athletic 6-foot-8 forward who can score like few players in this year’s NBA draft. His decisions leading up to the draft might send him slipping further down the lottery. Once projected as a top-three pick, Bailey could find himself waiting a bit longer than his Rutgers teammate Dylan Harper after opting to decline workouts with several teams within his projected draft range. Bailey might not see a freefall like Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the NFL draft, but his actions could be causing doubt among NBA executives heading into Wednesday…
