As Los Angeles first responders address the fallout from this month’s riots, the bill threatens to be especially high. Past policy choices from state and city officials have made handling each successive crisis even tougher, both logistically and financially. Without a serious change in priorities, Californians can expect a vicious cycle of escalating costs. Set aside the estimated $134 million cost of federal backup, and $20 million already reported spent by the county sheriff’s department. The latter expects to shell out a record half-a-billion in overtime pay this fiscal year. Last year, the city set its own record $1.1 billion…
By LINLEY SANDERS WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, it looked as though the United States was steadily climbing toward a consensus on same-sex marriage. But 10 years after the Supreme Court ruled that there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, the split between Republicans and Democrats on the issue is wider than it’s been in decades. Recent polling from Gallup shows that Americans’ support for same-sex marriage is higher than it was in 2015. Gallup’s latest data, however, finds a 47-percentage-point gap on the issue between Republicans and Democrats, the largest since it first began tracking this measure 29…
Mental health resources may soon fit in the pockets of college students across America. Rep. Lou Correa, D-Santa Ana, has reintroduced legislation to require colleges and universities to list various suicide hotlines and mental health resources on printed student IDs. The bill — named the Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act — would require the contact information for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, for the Crisis Text Line and for a campus mental health center to be listed on every college ID. Both lifelines are national campaigns available 24/7 through phone, text and online with counselors prepared to…
Why so few home sales in the Inland Empire? Well, local renters enjoy the nation’s 11th-largest savings between what landlords charge and the cost of financing a house purchase. My trusty spreadsheet reviewed a study by Zillow that estimated everyday rent cost for single-family homes compared to monthly mortgage payments, assuming 10% down. The study looked at April conditions for 50 large U.S. metropolitan areas, including six California markets. Of course, renting in the metro comprising Riverside and San Bernardino counties remains a financial challenge. Leasing of a single-family house ran $3,085 a month, according to Zillow’s math. That’s the…
ANAHEIM — In the three most emotional innings of the season, the Angels received two home runs from rookie Christian Moore, all while Zach Neto departed with an injury. Moore’s second home run of the game ended a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings. It was just two innings after he tied the score by going deep. In between, Neto’s injury in the ninth still hung over the proceedings. The heroics were so unexpected, even Moore himself was unsure about it all. He sprinted around the bases with a dive into third not knowing his line…
Nearly 500 people signed up to speak to the Redlands school board Tuesday night, June 24, before it voted on policies to ban most flags and make it easier to remove explicit books. The meeting appears to be headed late into the night as the Redlands Unified School District board looked to potentially bar all but the American and U.S. military flags and adjust its library policy to streamline the process of taking books with sexually explicit material off shelves. A parent notification policy on the agenda was pushed to the next board meeting on Tuesday, July 8. The library and…
A 31-year-old man allegedly under the influence struck and killed a bicyclist with his vehicle on Saturday in Fontana, authorities said. At around 11:09 p.m., Fontana police officers responded to a call regarding a collision in the area of Ivy Avenue and Palmetto Avenue, south of Foothill Boulevard. Officers determined the male victim was riding his bicycle when he was run over. The suspect vehicle driver was identified as Gilbert Perez, according to a police news release. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Perez was booked on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury, according to…
By JACKSON CASTELLANO The Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla. — LAFC avoided going scoreless in the Club World Cup with just minutes to spare and played Brazilian power Flamengo to a 1-1 draw in its final match of the tournament. Denis Bouanga scored in the 84th minute for LAFC, but Wallace Yan produced an equalizer in the 86th on Tuesday night at Camping World Stadium. Flamengo (2-0-1), which came into the match with the top spot in Group D already secured, finished one point ahead of English Premier League power Chelsea (2-1-0). LAFC, which had already been eliminated from advancing, finished…
DENVER — You don’t go 18-61 by accident. The Dodgers scored six runs in the fourth inning, aided and abetted by the Colorado Rockies’ shortcomings, but had to hold on until the end of a 9-7 victory on Tuesday night at Coors Field. The signature moment in this installment of a historically bad season for the Rockies came during that fourth inning. Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia made two errors in the inning and a third defensive blunder – a poor throw home that went as a fielder’s choice rather than an error. Toglia’s second error, though, managed to bring…
Anger and uncertainty descended Tuesday afternoon on UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center after federal immigration agents showed up with a woman who was having health issues while in their custody, upsetting doctors and nurses as the agents entered the emergency room and drawing protesters outside who feared an ICE raid was underway, according to witnesses. Hospital officials later said that no raids had taken place at the Westwood facility, and that the woman had been discharged. The woman, whose identity was not immediately known, was brought to the center after experiencing a medical issue while in the custody of federal…
