Once again, Sacramento is trying to force high-density living down the throats of people who have worked their whole lives to own a single-family home in a low-density neighborhood. You may remember that in 2021, Sen. Toni Atkins, now a candidate for governor, abolished single-family zoning throughout California with her Senate Bill 9, which required cities to approve lot splits that turned one single-family home into four residences on the same parcel of land. This week, the Senate Housing Committee considered SB 677, a bill from Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) that would make changes to SB 9. In a…
By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER, AP Economics Writer President Donald Trump is badgering the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, but even if the Fed gave in to the pressure, it wouldn’t necessarily lead to lower borrowing costs for consumers. In fact, economists say, Trump’s ongoing attacks on Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his tariff policies could keep the longer-term interest rates that matter for consumers and businesses higher than they otherwise would be. A less-independent Fed can lead, over time, to higher borrowing costs, as investors worry that inflation may spike in the future. As a result they demand higher yields…
Arrests as well as citations for illegal use of handicapped parking placards at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival both increased in 2025 over 2024, the Indio Police Department said. By LAURAN NEERGAARD and MATTHEW PERRONE WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration’s effort to impose new requirements on Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine — the nation’s only traditional protein-based option for the coronavirus — is sowing uncertainty about updates to other vaccines, too. Novavax said Monday that the Food and Drug Administration was asking the company to run a new clinical trial of its vaccine after the agency grants full approval. The company said it had responded and that it believed its shot remains “approvable.” But a weekend post on social media by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary suggested the prospect of needing…

California lawmakers have embraced a variety of efforts to make the state’s freeways and streets safer, as epitomized by a statement Gov. Gavin Newsom issued late last year. He pointed to new laws that, for instance, expand the use of automated speed cameras, stop license-plate obstruction and invest in “safer, more inclusive street design.” The state even embarked on a project of “road diets” that reduce traffic lanes to slow drivers. Yet the state continues to ignore the most obvious way to improve road safety: remove the licenses of those drivers who have a history of driving dangerously. A shocking…

By Josh Eidelson and Daniela Sirtori | Bloomberg Starbucks union delegates voted to reject the company’s latest contract proposal, which organizers say falls short by only guaranteeing annual raises of at least 2%. About 500 baristas representing Starbucks’ 550-plus unionized US stores voted this week on the company’s latest contract offer, according to the union Workers United. Of those delegates, 81% rejected the proposal, 14% voted to accept it and the rest abstained. While the two sides have reached tentative agreements on dozens of contract issues, including workplace safety, dress code and attendance policy, the union said the offer lacks guarantees on how many hours…
Two 17-year-olds were ejected from an allegedly stolen car after a pursuit on the 91 Freeway ended when the car crashed and flipped off a freeway ramp, landing in a 24 Hour Fitness parking lot, authorities said. The pursuit began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, when officers saw a car stolen out of Corona near Columbia Avenue and the 215 Freeway, in the north end of Riverside, police said. Additional officers were called and police waited for backup before they attempted to pull the car over. The driver failed to stop and a short pursuit began on the…
By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — Another federal judge in Washington has expressed skepticism on the legality of President Donald Trump’s executive order targeting a prominent law firm, saying he was concerned that the clear purpose of the edict was punishment. U.S. District Judge John Bates had already temporarily halted the Trump administration’s executive order against the firm of Jenner & Block but heard arguments Monday on a request by the firm to block it permanently. Lawyers for two other firms — Perkins Coie and WilmerHale — made similar arguments last week to judges who appeared receptive to their positions.…
