The first negotiations for a new contract for workers at Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs and Vons grocery stores from San Luis Obispo to the U.S.-Mexico border since they voted overwhelmingly to authorize an unfair labor practices strike began Wednesday. The United Food and Commercial Workers has accused the stores of conducting “surveillance, threats and interrogation of employees” and other “union-busting tactics are designed to interfere with workers’ efforts to achieve a fair contract.” Courtney Carranza, the director of communications and public affairs for the Southern California Division of Albertsons, Pavilions and Vons, called allegations of unfair labor practices “without merit.” For…
Without warning — even to local police — masked federal agents have been captured on video descending on Southern California businesses, getting out of unmarked or lightly marked vehicles and, swiftly, detaining who they suspect are illegal immigrants. The videos show officers, also wearing T-shirts, jeans and hats with the only indication at times of their law enforcement status an olive green vest with “Police” or “Border Patrol” written in small yellow letters on the back. In Torrance on Sunday, June 22, more than a dozen agents, mostly in plainclothes, arrived at the Bubble Bath Car Wash on 213th Street…

In a decision with broad implications for victims of January’s wildfires, the state’s home insurer of last resort is on the hook to pay for smoke damage claims, according to a court ruling issued this week. The California FAIR Plan said it would likely not appeal the Tuesday decision by Superior Court Judge Stuart Rice. The ruling from Los Angeles Superior Court said the FAIR Plan violated state law in how it treats all smoke damage claims. Rice wrote that “evidence might exist” to show that the plaintiff was underpaid for his smoke damage claim, but that the “unlawful language” used…
By MARC LEVY HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump will control the so-called “golden share” that’s part of the national security agreement under which he allowed Japan-based Nippon Steel to buy out iconic American steelmaker U.S. Steel, according to disclosures with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The provision gives the president the power to appoint a board member and have a say in company decisions that affect domestic steel production and competition with overseas producers. Under the provision, Trump — or someone he designates — controls that decision-making power while he is president. However, control over those powers…
ANAHEIM — Yusei Kikuchi overcome a rough first inning that he didn’t deserve. The left-hander was victimized by an error and a missed call by the plate umpire in a two-run, 31-pitch first inning, but he still turned in one of his best outings of the year to lead the Angels to a 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. After giving up the unearned runs in the first, Kikuchi didn’t give up anything else through seven innings, striking out 12. Jo Adell homered – his 10th of June and 17th of the season – and drove…
On June 6th, 1978, California voters delivered a shock wave, not just in California, but throughout America. Proposition 13 reduced property taxes by more than half and imposed other restrictions on government’s ability to extract money from citizens and businesses. Despite Prop. 13’s victory with 64.8 percent of the vote, tax-and-spend progressives immediately filed a lawsuit directly in the California Supreme Court seeking to invalidate the new measure. Fortunately (and perhaps bowing to public sentiment) the court rejected the lawsuit against a variety of constitutional arguments. However, it wasn’t long before new, more limited, legal attacks against Prop. 13 began…
By ALEX VEIGA The head of the federal government agency that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac wants the mortgage giants to consider accepting a homebuyer’s cryptocurrency holdings in their criteria for buying mortgages from banks. William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie and Freddie, ordered the agencies Wednesday to prepare a proposal for consideration of crypto as an asset for reserves when they assess risks in single-family home loans. Pulte also instructed the agencies that their mortgage risk assessments should not require cryptocurrency assets to be converted to U.S. dollars. And only crypto assets…
By LAUREN HEPLER and ROBERT LEWIS | CalMatters California courts have failed to report hundreds of vehicular manslaughter convictions to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles over the past five years, allowing roadway killers to improperly keep their driver’s licenses, a CalMatters investigation has found. Marvin Salazar was convicted in May 2023 for killing his 18-year-old friend Joseph Ramirez, who was in the passenger seat when Salazar gunned his car, lost control and slammed into a tree, court records show. Under California law, the state should have taken away Salazar’s driving privileges for at least three years. But the Los…
