By STEVE PEOPLES and ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE NEW YORK (AP) — The stunning success of Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old self-described democratic socialist, in the race for New York City mayor has exposed anew the fiery divisions plaguing the Democratic Party as it struggles to repair its brand nearly half a year into Donald Trump’s presidency. A fresh round of infighting erupted among Democratic officials, donors and political operatives on Wednesday, a day after Mamdani’s leading opponent, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, conceded the Democratic primary. Mamdani appears on a glide path to the nomination, though ranked choice vote counting will…

By CLAIRE SAVAGE The federal agency charged with protecting workers’ civil rights has terminated a New York administrative judge who opposed White House directives, including President Donald Trump’s executive order decreeing male and female as two “immutable” sexes. In February, Administrative Judge Karen Ortiz, who worked in the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s New York office, called Trump’s order “unethical” and criticized Acting Chair Andrea Lucas — Trump’s pick to lead the agency — for complying with it by pausing work on legal cases involving discrimination claims from transgender workers. In an email copied to more than 1,000 colleagues, Ortiz…

Carter Bryant’s journey always led here. From crawling onto the court at Martin Luther King High as a toddler, while his dad trained some of the Southern California region’s brightest stars – names like Kawhi Leonard and Tony Snell – to working so hard his parents would take his shoes, only for him to keep going barefoot, he was always meant for this stage in Brooklyn, clad in a royal maroon suit. A life of work led to this moment. On Wednesday night, the San Antonio Spurs selected the 19-year-old Riverside native with the 14th pick in the 2025 NBA…

By LISA MASCARO WASHINGTON (AP) — One key unsettled issue stalling progress on President Donald Trump’s big bill in Congress is particularly daunting: How to cut billions from health care without harming Americans or the hospitals and others who provide care? Republicans are struggling to devise a solution to the health care problem their package has created. Already, estimates say 10.9 million more people would be without health coverage under the House-passed version of the bill. GOP senators have proposed steeper reductions, which some say go too far. “The Senate cuts in Medicaid are far deeper than the House cuts,…

By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer NEW YORK — Cooper Flagg is headed to the Dallas Mavericks, who might have found their next franchise superstar less than five months after trading one away. The Mavericks took the Duke forward with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft Wednesday night, selecting the 18-year-old from Maine who was the national college player of the year in his lone season. By MATT O’BRIEN and BARBARA ORTUTAY A federal judge on Wednesday sided with Facebook parent Meta Platforms in dismissing a copyright infringement lawsuit from a group of authors who accused the company of stealing their works to train its artificial intelligence technology. The ruling from U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabri was the second in a week from San Francisco’s federal court to dismiss major copyright claims from book authors against the rapidly developing AI industry. Chhabri found that 13 authors who sued Meta “made the wrong arguments” and tossed the case. But the judge also said that the ruling is…

By JIM VERTUNO AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A group of Dallas-area families and faith leaders have filed a lawsuit seeking to block a new Texas law that requires copies of the Ten Commandments be posted in every public school classroom. The federal lawsuit, filed Tuesday, claims the measure is an unconstitutional violation of the separation of church and state. Texas is the latest and largest state to attempt a mandate that has run into legal challenges elsewhere. A federal appeals court on Friday blocked a similar law in Louisiana. Some families have sued over Arkansas’ law. The plaintiffs in the…

DENVER — Biding his time between starts for the Dodgers, Emmet Sheehan wasn’t just good Wednesday afternoon – he was perfect. Sheehan pitched six perfect innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City, striking out 13 of the 18 batters he faced in a dominating performance against the Sacramento River Cats. “I did (see that). It was pretty good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “That’s what you’re supposed to do. “He did what he needed to do. I’m not sure when he’ll be back on line. But he did what he needed to do.” Sheehan made his return from Tommy John surgery with…
