Sacramento’s political insiders want you to believe that California’s proposed redistricting overhaul is a bold stand against Texas’s recent redistricting efforts or Trump’s politics. The fact is, this has never been about Texas or the President. This is about Sacramento Democrats and political insiders grabbing power, plain and simple. Political elites have been waiting for an opportunity to redraw California’s Congressional Districts to increase power for years. Over a decade ago, California voters sent a clear message: they didn’t want politicians drawing their own district lines. That’s why they passed Prop 11 and Prop 20, creating the Citizens Redistricting Commission.…

Have you heard we have a new estate tax bill? Well, not exactly. But estate taxes were one of the myriad items covered by the Reconciliation Act signed into law on July 4, 2025, and unofficially referred to as One Big Beautiful Bill. The estate tax exemption, already at $13.9 million per person in 2025, will increase to $15 million in 2026, and continue to increase with cost-of-living adjustments in years to come. What does the new law mean for your estate planning? For most of us regular folk (the non-multimillionaires), the new estate tax laws won’t change a thing,…

A divide-and-conquer ethos could shape the Inland Empire’s representation in Congress. Maps for new House of Representatives districts going before California voters Nov. 4 would dilute — if not outright erase — GOP voters’ influence in Riverside County by splitting up red cities that form a backbone of support for Republicans Ken Calvert of Corona and Darrell Issa of San Diego County. If approved by voters, Proposition 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act, would obliterate Calvert’s purple district, potentially jeopardizing his three-decade run on Capitol Hill. Issa would go from a safe red district to one with…

I went time traveling recently, back 100 years to the Jazz Age, a time of bootleg booze, the Charleston, a new mass media called radio, and deep cynicism after the mindless slaughter of World War I and a global pandemic that killed 100 million or more. How did I pull off this stunt?  I read a book. Specifically, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” published one hundred years ago, and first encountered by me in High School half a century ago. I grew up in Gatsby country, Great Neck, New York, which is where Fitzgerald lived when he wrote Gatsby.…

In California’s Moss Landing, more than 1,000 people were forced to evacuate in January when one of the largest storage facilities for lithium-ion batteries in the world caught fire. Days later, the toxic metals nickel, cobalt and manganese were found at a nearby estuary, Elkhorn Slough, in unusually high concentrations. One county supervisor called it a “wake-up call” for battery safety in the ongoing push for sustainable energy. Local residents sued several companies involved with the batteries and their storage, claiming negligence and that the lithium-ion batteries being stored there were “prone to thermal instability.” Though the federal government deems…

DEL MAR — For a horse with a record of bad starts and a history of disappointment at Del Mar, the Pacific Classic on Saturday started out like a hard-to-watch rerun. Fierceness came out of the inside stall in the starting gate and soon took a left turn, looking as if he was going to jump over or crash through the temporary rail with jockey John Velazquez. “Yeah, he had us a little worried there,” said Sophie Green, the assistant trainer who traveled with the New York-based Fierceness for the $1 million, Grade I Pacific Classic. “I wasn’t very happy,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who’d watched…

LOS ANGELES — Gotta hand it to them. I mean, they really better. If USC wants to unlock its offense under redshirt sophomore quarterback Jayden Maiava this season, the Trojans should turn to their tantalizing tailback tandem of Waymond Jordan and Eli Sanders. There are real concerns about the Trojans entering Year 4 under Lincoln Riley. Just the fifth time in 60 years they’re not starting the season in the Associated Press Top 25, USC is forging forward this season with an unproven QB, offensive line and cornerbacks. It doesn’t have exceptional depth at linebacker and receiver. But it’s got…
