Corona police pulled out a 3-month-old boy who had been locked inside a hot car while the infant’s father went inside a post office, officials said Thursday. Police posted a video of the June 17 incident to their Instagram account on June 24. Officers arrived at the post office at 414 W. Grand Blvd. at 5:36 p.m. They heard the baby crying and believed it was having difficulty breathing, said Sgt. Tobias Kouroubacalis, a department spokesman. The car was not running. “We have to do something right now,” Kouroubacalis said, describing the officers’ assessment of the situation. Corona firefighters later…

By Claudia Boyd-Barrett | KFF Health News For months, Maria, 55, a caregiver to older adults in Orange County, has been trying not to smile. If she opens her mouth too wide, she worries, people will see her chipped, plaque-covered front teeth. An immigrant without legal status, Maria doesn’t have health or dental insurance. When her teeth start to throb, she swallows pain pills. Last summer, a dentist said it would cost $2,400 to fix her teeth. That’s more than she can afford. “It’s so expensive,” said Maria, who often works 12-hour days lifting clients in and out of bed…

Bryan Crain, chief executive officer of the 52-year-old Orange County Rescue Mission, stumbled onto an in-house, jobs training program concept as he made small-talk with contractors working to remodel a kitchen on the 33-acre Double R Ranch. “I want to equip people to — if they’re interested — take a first step in working a trade somewhere, so that at least when they show up at a job site, they’ll know enough to be able to start a beginning task,” Crain said of a budding jobs-training program he launched last year. “But we also want to equip people to just…

Adrian Martinez had clocked out for a lunch break from his Walmart job in the Pico Rivera Towne Center on June 17 when a man ran past him followed closely by an armed, masked agent. When he saw the agent grab and “man handle” the janitor, Martinez said he turned his car around, parked and jumped out, leaving the vehicle running and the door open. He joined a growing group of people standing up for the man and telling the agents that they were acting too violently. Martinez told the agents that they were intimidating the man and goading him…

By TAMMY WEBBER, Associated Press Power plants and industrial facilities that emit carbon dioxide, the primary driver of global warming, are hopeful that Congress will keep tax credits for capturing the gas and storing it deep underground. The process, called carbon capture and sequestration, is seen by many as an important way to reduce pollution during a transition to renewable energy. But it faces criticism from some conservatives, who say it is expensive and unnecessary, and from environmentalists, who say it has consistently failed to capture as much pollution as promised and is simply a way for producers of fossil…

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER, AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week, the Labor Department said Thursday, a sign that companies aren’t cutting many jobs. Jobless claims for the week ended June 21 dropped 10,000 to 236,000, a historically-low level. The four-week average of claims, which smooths out weekly volatility, dipped 750 to 245,000. Applications for unemployment aid are a proxy for layoffs, and so the decline is evidence that businesses are mostly holding onto their employees. Yet separate data suggests hiring also remains cool, in what economists are referring to as…

By ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE and JENNIFER PELTZ, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Eric Adams set out Thursday to persuade skeptical voters to grant him a second term, hosting a kickoff event for his independent reelection bid after a corruption indictment, a controversial dismissal and a decision to drop out of a the Democratic primary. Standing on the steps of City Hall, Adams sought to draw a contrast between himself and the likely Democratic candidate, Zohran Mamdani, casting the young liberal as a child of privilege with no real political achievements or realistic policies. “This election is a…

For the seventh consecutive season, the Ducks will be selecting in the top 10 of the NHL draft. Or will they? While there are plenty of players who could help the Ducks down the line in this year’s draft, unfolding Friday and Saturday at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, general manager Pat Verbeek has pivoted from playing prospects and selling at the trade deadline to adding win-now pieces and bridge players. That could include dealing away a lottery pick for a more established NHLer. “Well, yes, I’m looking at that as well, certainly. I think there’s a lot of teams looking…
