President Donald Trump might be the deal-making genius he and his supporters claim he is, but so far genius and chaos look similar. Trump’s tearing up trade deals and slapping tariffs onto most of the countries in the world. He’s trying to pressure the Federal Reserve chairman to lower interest rates. And he’s imposing massive pain on the stock market to accomplish his goals of reviving U.S. manufacturing and, I don’t know, something amorphous and generic like making America “win.” Trump is frustrating allies and trade partners with his unpredictability and unreliability. The Dow is headed for its worst April…

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office announced Friday that it has declined to file charges against hundreds of people arrested in pro-Palestinian and counter protests on the UCLA and USC campuses last year, citing insufficient evidence. In a statement, the City Attorney’s Office stated that after reviewing more than 300 arrests from the mass protests in April and May of 2024, criminal cases were declined for most people “for evidentiary reasons or due to a university’s failure or inability to assist in identification or other information needed for prosecution.” Misdemeanor charges were filed against two people, both stemming from alleged…

By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER WASHINGTON — A former career Justice Department prosecutor is challenging his firing by the White House, saying it was for “unprecedented partisan and political reasons” and undermines a “bedrock principle” of the justice system after he was dismissed following a post by right-wing activist Laura Loomer. Adam Schleifer, an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, was fired without explanation last month in an email from a White House official. It came exactly one hour after Loomer, a conservative internet personality known for incendiary comments, called for his removal in a social media post highlighting his past…

An update was provided on the show “Gil’s Arena,” which is hosted by Arenas’ father and former NBA star Gilbert Arenas. “Happy to announce that Alijah is doing much better,” show producer Josiah Johnson said. “I just got off the phone with Gil about five minutes ago. Alijah is doing better — walking, talking, progressing very well and should be released from the hospital very soon.” Johnson also said that Arenas was on his way to…

Once again, Sacramento is trying to force high-density living down the throats of people who have worked their whole lives to own a single-family home in a low-density neighborhood. You may remember that in 2021, Sen. Toni Atkins, now a candidate for governor, abolished single-family zoning throughout California with her Senate Bill 9, which required cities to approve lot splits that turned one single-family home into four residences on the same parcel of land. This week, the Senate Housing Committee considered SB 677, a bill from Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) that would make changes to SB 9. In a…

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER, AP Economics Writer President Donald Trump is badgering the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, but even if the Fed gave in to the pressure, it wouldn’t necessarily lead to lower borrowing costs for consumers. In fact, economists say, Trump’s ongoing attacks on Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his tariff policies could keep the longer-term interest rates that matter for consumers and businesses higher than they otherwise would be. A less-independent Fed can lead, over time, to higher borrowing costs, as investors worry that inflation may spike in the future. As a result they demand higher yields…

By LAURAN NEERGAARD and MATTHEW PERRONE WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration’s effort to impose new requirements on Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine — the nation’s only traditional protein-based option for the coronavirus — is sowing uncertainty about updates to other vaccines, too. Novavax said Monday that the Food and Drug Administration was asking the company to run a new clinical trial of its vaccine after the agency grants full approval. The company said it had responded and that it believed its shot remains “approvable.” But a weekend post on social media by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary suggested the prospect of needing…

California lawmakers have embraced a variety of efforts to make the state’s freeways and streets safer, as epitomized by a statement Gov. Gavin Newsom issued late last year. He pointed to new laws that, for instance, expand the use of automated speed cameras, stop license-plate obstruction and invest in “safer, more inclusive street design.” The state even embarked on a project of “road diets” that reduce traffic lanes to slow drivers. Yet the state continues to ignore the most obvious way to improve road safety: remove the licenses of those drivers who have a history of driving dangerously. A shocking…
