LAFC and forward Olivier Giroud have reached a mutual decision to part ways, the club announced Friday. Giroud’s final match as a member of LAFC will be on Sunday, June 29, against Vancouver at BMO Stadium. “Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC,” said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington. “He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him. Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him, his wife Jennifer, and his family all the very…
California’s weather whiplash has left the Golden State in a place of severe uncertainty about its diminishing water supply and increasing human and environmental demands for water. Research that my colleagues and I published last year, “The Magnitude of California’s Water Challenges” showed that Californians can expect their water supply to shrink 12 to 25% by 2050, up to 9 million acre-feet, or equal to one to two Lake Shastas. Our recent follow-up research, “Inaction’s Economic Cost for California’s Water Supply Challenges” (insert link once available) estimates the costs of such water supply losses. These economic losses could reach $3.4–6.4…
Pacific Premier Bancorp Inc. plans to lay off nearly 6% of its workforce at its Irvine headquarters beginning Aug. 1 on the eve of a merger with a Pacific Northwest institution, according to a filing with California’s employment department. Pacific Premier announced in April that it planned to merge with Columbia Banking System in an all stock deal worth about $2 billion. The combined commercial banks, which will have about $70 billion in assets once regulators approve the deal, said they plan to complete their merger in the second half of 2025. In a letter filed with the Employment Development Department on…
By ERIC TUCKER and COLLIN BINKLEY, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The president of the University of Virginia is resigning his position under pressure from the Justice Department, which had pushed for his departure amid scrutiny of the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion practices, a person familiar with the matter said Friday. The departure of James Ryan, who had led the school since 2018, represents a dramatic escalation in the Trump administration’s effort to reshape higher education. Doing it at a public university marks a new frontier in a campaign that has almost exclusively targeted Ivy League schools. It also…

Last year, the City of Angels experienced Hell when the wildfires tore through its hillsides. More than five months after the flames died down, however, homeowners wanting to rebuild their lives have come across a new devil—a bureaucracy that has only approved a handful of building permits during the first half of the year, a staggering lack of competence in a city and state that considers itself to be on the cutting-edge. Even if homeowners get through local agencies, however, a larger, more powerful administrative entity looms: the California Coastal Commission, a bureaucratic leviathan that holds so much power in…
By ALEX VEIGA, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest sign of trouble in the U.S. housing market: A pickup in home purchase agreements falling through before they’re finalized. Some 6% of pending contracts to buy a home were canceled in May, down from 7% in April, but up from 5% in May last year, according to data from National Association of Realtors. May is the third consecutive month with an annual increase in pending home sales cancelations. A separate analysis of housing data by Redfin found that 14.6% of all pending sales in May fell out of contract,…
By KEN SWEET, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Senate Republicans have moved to cut the funding of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by roughly half, as part of President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which is likely to lead to hundreds of job cuts at the nation’s financial watchdog agency. It would be a major blow to the CFPB, which was created after the 2008 financial crisis to police potential bad actors in the financial services industry, and it would be a win for the GOP, who have largely wanted to make the CFPB go away since its creation. The…
By CORA LEWIS NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of millions of ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ loans will soon affect credit scores for millions of Americans who use the loans to buy clothing, furniture, concert tickets, and takeout. Scoring company FICO said Monday that it is rolling out a new model that factors the short-term loans into their consumer scores. A majority of lenders use FICO scores to determine a borrower’s credit worthiness. Previously, the loans had been excluded, though Buy Now, Pay Later company Affirm began voluntarily reporting pay-in-four loans to Experian, a separate credit bureau, in April. The new…
By COLLIN BINKLEY, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican plan to expand private school vouchers nationwide was dealt a major setback Friday when the Senate parliamentarian said the proposal would run afoul of procedural rules. The years-in-the-making plan would have created a federal tax credit supporting scholarships to help families send their children to private schools or other options beyond their local public schools. But in an overnight announcement, the Senate parliamentarian advised against including the proposal in President Donald Trump’s tax cut and spending bill. It added to mounting problems for Republicans as key proposals were deemed ineligible…
