HOUSTON — The encouraging start to Kyle Hendricks’ season came to a quick end with one rough inning. Hendricks gave up five runs in the second inning of the Angels’ 7-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. The loss also ended the Angels’ season-opening streak of four straight series wins, as they lost two of three. The Angels (9-6) kept mashing homers, but the blasts hit by Taylor Ward, Nolan Schanuel and Jorge Soler were all solos, and that was not enough to overcome the damage done against Hendricks. After Ward and Schanuel put the Angels up 2-0,…
SAN FRANCISCO – Warriors guard Steph Curry is expected to be available for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Clippers. “We’re planning on him playing, but he’s got to get through warmups first,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. During Friday’s win in Portland, Curry went back to the locker room with 1:59 remaining in the first quarter after hitting his right thumb on a Blazer defender’s knee on a drive. Curry returned midway through the second quarter with a wrap around his right hand, and said postgame that X-rays came back negative. The 37-year-old previously dealt with a thumb injury…

HOUSTON — Nolan Schanuel spent his winter trying to improve his bat speed, and so far it’s worked. The Angels first baseman has increased his average bat speed from 65.2 mph to 68.2 mph, making him one of just three everyday players in the big leagues to have an increase of at least 3 mph. Schanuel came into Sunday’s game hitting .283 with a .790 OPS. He hit his first homer of the season on Saturday. Last year Schanuel hit .250 with a .706 OPS. He hit 13 homers last season. “He looks a little stronger,” Manager Ron Washington said.…
“Why is this night different from all other nights?” Thus, at sunset begins the ritual of questions during the Seder meal with which observant Jews start the celebration of Passover, or Pesach, which commemorates the deliverance of the Israelite slaves from bondage in Egypt. The youngest child at the table is expected to answer the questions, fulfilling the commandment, “And thou shalt tell thy son.” According to tradition, as related in the book of Exodus, the Israelites were made slaves in ancient Egypt. But Yahweh, the Hebrew God, instructed Moses to demand of the ruling Pharaoh that His people be…
Perhaps if I grew up in a family in which the patriarch was a Queens real estate tycoon, I would see the world differently. But that’s not the family structure in which I grew up. My father is a chemist, and he made big rockets go boom with the whiz kids in the early 1950s at Aerojet in Azusa, leading to the Saturn V, the vehicle that carried the Apollo astronauts to the moon in 1969. My step-father was a physicist, also a rocket scientist, who did the math in those early ‘50s that proved explosive power could get a…
Hundreds of student visas revoked. Peaceful, long-time residents being deported. People being detained with no criminal charges. We’ve all heard these stories in the last few weeks, as the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration (legal and illegal) picks up steam. Judging by how this crackdown is being reported by the media, one would assume everything the Trump administration is doing on immigration is blatantly illegal and unprecedented. But the truth is that many aspects of this crackdown are exactly what the U.S. immigration system allows the government to do. It is true that some of the administration’s recent actions on…
By KELVIN CHAN, AP Business Writer LONDON (AP) — Planning an international trip? Travelers should prepare for the possibility of extra scrutiny of their phones when crossing borders, especially when entering the United States. The Canadian government warned travelers in a recent travel advisory that U.S. border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices and “don’t need to provide a reason when requesting a password to open your device.” Some recent cases have made travelers nervous about their privacy, such as when a Brown University professor with a U.S. visa was deported to Lebanon after border agents found a…
Often in my estate planning practice, when someone is signing their documents, they will comment, “This is almost like buying a house!” My standard refrain is, “Well, it should be. This is dealing with everything you own, not just your house.” But the ubiquity of this comment goes to show exactly how much paperwork is involved in buying a house. Unfortunately, that often means one of the most important documents in the stack of papers put in front of a homebuyer doesn’t get the attention it deserves — the grant deed giving you title to the property. Why a title…
The Clippers’ postseason positioning rests with one game, one last chance, one final opportunity to land a coveted top-six seed. And if they miss, if they lose their regular-season finale on Sunday, the Clippers would likely – but not definitely – be staring at a spot in the Play-In Tournament, where the Nos. 7-10 teams battle for the final two seeds in the Western Conference playoff bracket. All that stands in their way are the Golden State Warriors. “High stakes, huh?” Clippers center Ivica Zubac said to reporters after Friday’s one-point victory against the Sacramento Kings. “It’s been like that…
