LOS ANGELES — Usually an athlete has to win the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup title to exclaim “I’m going to Disneyland,” but for Ducks draft pick Roger McQueen, the wait was only about 15 minutes after turning pro. The Ducks selected the lanky center (6-foot-5, 198 pounds) 10th overall in the first round of the NHL draft on Friday, making the Brandon Wheat Kings center the 11th forward in the Ducks’ past 14 selections and their third straight top pick up front. McQueen headed to the Magic Kingdom with his entire contingent, with the Ducks taking the newest…
By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday struck down another of President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting law firms. U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan ruled that the order against the firm of Susman Godfrey was unconstitutional and must be permanently blocked. The order was the latest ruling to reject Trump’s efforts to punish law firms for legal work he does not like and for employing attorneys he perceives as his adversaries. The Susman Godfrey firm suggested that it had drawn Trump’s ire at least in part because it represented Dominion Voting Systems in the voting machine…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ben Casparius has become Shohei Ohtani’s other half. Ohtani is scheduled to make his third start as a pitcher on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals – and Casparius is expected to make his third appearance in a ‘bulk’ role behind Ohtani. “I just think it’s sort of fallen out that way – with Shohei’s work days, with Ben when he’s been online. It’s just sort of worked out that way,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the pairing. “Actually when we chose to build Ben up as a starter, that was independent of Shohei. Then…
By LAURIE KELLMAN LONDON (AP) — If world leaders were teaching a course on how to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump early in his second term, their lesson plan might go like this: Pile on the flattery. Don’t chase the policy rabbits he sends running across the world stage. Wait out the threats to see what, specifically, he wants, and when possible, find a way to deliver it. With every Oval Office meeting and summit, the leaders of other countries are settling on tactics and strategy in their pursuit of a working relationship with the emboldened American leader who…
By GREG BEACHAM AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES — The New York Islanders selected defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. High-scoring forward Michael Misa went second overall to the San Jose Sharks, and the Chicago Blackhawks took Swedish forward Anton Frondell third at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The Islanders surprised nobody by using their first No. 1 selection since 2009 on the 17-year-old Schaefer, a 6-foot-2 blueliner from Hamilton, Ontario, who spent the past two seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters. He played only 17…
By BERNARD CONDON NEW YORK (AP) — Europeans still aren’t buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now. Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla’s billionaire CEO had promised a “major rebound” was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors. They were selling on…
By JOEY CAPPELLETTI WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic efforts in the Senate to prevent President Donald Trump from further escalating with Iran fell short Friday, with Republicans opposed to a resolution marking Congress’ first attempt to reassert its war powers following U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The resolution, authored by Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, aimed to affirm that Trump should seek authorization from Congress before launching more military action against Iran. Asked Friday if he would bomb Iranian nuclear sites again if he deemed necessary, Trump said, “Sure, without question.” Passage of the resolution was seen as a long…
The world according to Jim: • Have you, too, begun taking extra care not to do anything that might rupture your Achilles tendon? … • “Epidemic” isn’t exactly the right terminology, is it? Or maybe it is. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the noun as “an outbreak of disease that spreads quickly and affects many individuals at the same time” or “an outbreak or product of sudden rapid spread, growth, or development.” The Oxford English Dictionary adds this figurative definition: “A sudden, widespread occurrence of a phenomenon, typically an undesirable phenomenon.” No kidding. You can’t catch it by exposure, last I…
A Los Angeles man has been arrested on suspicion of impersonating a federal immigration agent in Huntington Park, authorities announced on Friday. On Tuesday, June 24, Huntington Park police officers located a suspicious black Dodge Durango illegally parked in a handicap zone in the 7000 block of South Alameda Street, city officials said. The vehicle had mounted red and blue LED lights, police-like radios, and a semi-automatic firearm magazine, officers observed. The driver, 24-year-old Fernando Diaz, returned to his vehicle, approached officers, and tried to play off their findings by saying he was a former Customs and Border Protection agent,…
By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN and SUDHIN THANAWALA WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday limiting federal judges from issuing nationwide injunctions threatens to upend numerous lawsuits that have led to orders blocking Trump administration policies. Between the start of the new administration and mid-May, judges issued roughly 40 nationwide injunctions against the White House on topics including federal funding, elections rules and diversity and equity considerations. Attorneys involved in some of those cases are vowing to keep fighting, noting the high court left open other legal paths that could have broad nationwide effect. Here’s a look at some of…
