By LISA MASCARO WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans appeared Friday to push President Donald Trump’s big bill back on track after a flurry of last-minute revisions, including deep cuts to food stamps, but there’s still a long way to go ahead of expected weekend votes. Trump himself at first gave Congress some breathing room as senators race to meet his Fourth of July deadline, declaring, “It’s not the end all,” during a press conference at the White House. But he reversed course a short while later, insisting Republicans in the House ensure it’s done by the Independence Day holiday. “We…

Democrats in the state Legislature have finalized a budget deal with Gov. Gavin Newsom that raises general fund spending and puts off major cuts to government programs for another year. Newsom announced Friday evening that he signed the $321 billion spending, just before the July 1 deadline While President Donald Trump’s administration was making life “incredibility difficult” for Californians with ICE raids, tariffs and federal spending cuts, Assembly Democrats have “delivered a budget that protects California,” Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said in a statement. “It cuts red tape to build more housing faster — because housing is the foundation of…

By CHINEDU ASADU, MATTHEW LEE and ELLEN KNICKMEYER WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda on Friday signed a peace deal facilitated by the U.S. to help end the decadeslong deadly fighting in eastern Congo while helping the U.S. government and American companies gain access to critical minerals in the region. “Today, the violence and destruction comes to an end, and the entire region begins a new chapter of hope and opportunity, harmony, prosperity and peace,” President Donald Trump told the foreign ministers of the two countries at a White House meeting. The agreement was signed earlier…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — By the most basic measures, Dustin May’s season has been a success. He has returned from two surgeries – one on his elbow and one in a life-threatening emergency – to give the Dodgers innings, more innings than he has ever pitched in a season before. They haven’t always been good innings, though. Undercut some by his defense, May struggled through four innings on Friday night, surrendering leads in two of them before calling it a night. The Dodgers kept going, grabbed a third lead and never let go of that one on their way to…

By KEVIN FREKING WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican efforts to loosen regulations on gun silencers and short-barreled rifles and shotguns have been dealt a big setback with the Senate parliamentarian advising that the proposal would need to clear a 60-vote threshold if included in their big tax and immigration bill. Gun rights groups had been lobbying aggressively for the measure, which would essentially treat silencers and the short-barreled firearms like long guns. Gun-control groups celebrated the parliamentarian’s ruling, saying the items have been regulated for nearly 100 years for good reason — they are a threat to first responders and communities.…

LOS ANGELES — Usually an athlete has to win the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup title to exclaim “I’m going to Disneyland,” but for Ducks draft pick Roger McQueen, the wait was only about 15 minutes after turning pro. The Ducks selected the lanky center (6-foot-5, 198 pounds) 10th overall in the first round of the NHL draft on Friday, making the Brandon Wheat Kings center the 11th forward in the Ducks’ past 14 selections and their third straight top pick up front. McQueen headed to the Magic Kingdom with his entire contingent, with the Ducks taking the newest…

By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday struck down another of President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting law firms. U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan ruled that the order against the firm of Susman Godfrey was unconstitutional and must be permanently blocked. The order was the latest ruling to reject Trump’s efforts to punish law firms for legal work he does not like and for employing attorneys he perceives as his adversaries. The Susman Godfrey firm suggested that it had drawn Trump’s ire at least in part because it represented Dominion Voting Systems in the voting machine…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ben Casparius has become Shohei Ohtani’s other half. Ohtani is scheduled to make his third start as a pitcher on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals – and Casparius is expected to make his third appearance in a ‘bulk’ role behind Ohtani. “I just think it’s sort of fallen out that way – with Shohei’s work days, with Ben when he’s been online. It’s just sort of worked out that way,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the pairing. “Actually when we chose to build Ben up as a starter, that was independent of Shohei. Then…

By LAURIE KELLMAN LONDON (AP) — If world leaders were teaching a course on how to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump early in his second term, their lesson plan might go like this: Pile on the flattery. Don’t chase the policy rabbits he sends running across the world stage. Wait out the threats to see what, specifically, he wants, and when possible, find a way to deliver it. With every Oval Office meeting and summit, the leaders of other countries are settling on tactics and strategy in their pursuit of a working relationship with the emboldened American leader who…
