The advocacy group Consumer Watchdog filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Insurance and its commissioner to stop potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in “surcharges” State Farm wants to charge homeowners in order to cover claims from January’s firestorms in the Los Angeles area. By MICHAEL CASEY BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to release billions of dollars meant to finance climate and infrastructure projects across the country. U.S. District Judge Mary McElroy, who was appointed by President Donald Trump during his first term, sided with conservation and nonprofit groups and issued a preliminary injunction until she rules on the merits of the lawsuit. The injunction is nationwide. McElroy concluded that the seven nonprofits demonstrated that the freeze was “arbitrary and capricious” and that the powers asserted by the federal agencies, including the White House’s Office of Management…
Key Lawrence has logged more miles than an Allman Brothers roadie, but he still has not enjoyed a meal at In-N-Out Burger. Don’t worry – it’s on his list of things to do. Lawrence, a UCLA safety and native of Nashville, Tennessee, is prepping for his sixth season of college football. The Music City Man is striking all the right keys in his first spring camp with the Bruins. “I’m passionate, and I’m someone who’s going to find the ball and uplift my teammates,” Lawrence said. By MANUEL RUEDA BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — The White House is urging Colombia to halt the implementation of new auto safety regulations that could jeopardize American car exports to Colombia, as both nations prepare to discuss tariffs recently imposed on Colombian products including coffee, avocados, flowers and oil. In a letter to Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that plans by Colombia to change certification requirements for cars and auto parts entering the country could lead to the “total cessation” of U.S. automotive exports to Colombia, which were worth almost $700 million last year. The letter,…
By TARA COPP WASHINGTON (AP) — With the Trump administration expected to reverse a controversial 2023 decision on the permanent location of U.S. Space Command, a review by the Defense Department inspector general could not determine why Colorado was chosen over Alabama. The inspector general’s report, issued Friday, said this was in part due to a lack of access to senior defense officials during the Biden administration, when the review began. The location of U.S. Space Command has significant implications for the local economy, given the fast growth in national defense spending in space-based communications and defenses. In 2021, the…

Although the Angels star still can’t officially say that he’ll be a part of Team USA next year, he left little doubt with his comments on Tuesday. “I want to, for sure,” Trout said. “I expect to, for sure. A lot of unfinished business. No doubt.” The 2023 WBC ended with the USA losing to Japan, with Trout striking out against then-Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani to end the tournament. The participants on next year’s team will be revealed gradually. Mark De Rosa returns as the manager,…
By JUAN A. LOZANO HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas judge on Tuesday threw out a federal rule that would have capped credit card late fees after officials with President Donald Trump’s administration and a coalition of major banking groups agreed that the rule was illegal. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in Fort Worth came a day after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and a collection of major industry groups that had filed a lawsuit last year to stop the rule announced they had come to an agreement to throw out the rule. The groups that sued included…
By LOLITA C. BALDOR WASHINGTON (AP) — Dan Caldwell, a senior adviser to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has been placed on administrative leave and was escorted out of the Pentagon by security on Tuesday, two defense officials said. The officials said Caldwell’s sudden downfall was tied to an investigation into unauthorized disclosure of department information. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters. Caldwell, who served in the Marine Corps, was one of several senior advisers who worked closely with Hegseth. Caldwell’s ties to the secretary go back to Hegseth’s time as the head of Concerned Veterans…
