By TIM SULLIVAN, Associated PressThe ominous letters went to hundreds of state and local officials across the U.S. two days before Christmas. It was a potential blueprint for how the Trump administration may attack “sanctuary” jurisdictions that resist mass deportations. They threatened criminal prosecutions and lawsuits going after officials’ personal finances. They invoked RICO, the federal statute often used to fight organized crime.“You and your subordinates could potentially face up to 20 years in prison,” America First Legal, a group led by current and former advisors to President-elect Donald Trump, said in the letter. Its president, Stephen Miller, will be deputy…

Soon we will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Across the nation, tributes will be paid to the man who gave his life to ensure that we would be free at last. Marching bands will parade down boulevards bearing his name as politicians wave to assembled crowds. Schools, parks and libraries bear his name; statues stand erect. So many honors for a man who inspired us to dream. But are African Americans anywhere near “the promised land”?It’s been:• 71 years since Brown v. Board of Education ended school segregation.• 62 years since Dr. King led the March on…
By SOPHIA TAREEN, Associated PressCHICAGO (AP) — The Rev. Homero Sanchez said he didn’t realize the depth of fear in the Chicago immigrant community he serves until someone asked him to handle the sale of their family’s home and other finances if they are picked up this week when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.Immigrants in large cities have been preparing for mass arrests since Trump won election in November, but reports that his initial push would be in the Chicago area has brought a new sense of urgency and fear.“They feel they have been targeted for who they are. Congress appears likely to pass the Laken Riley Act this month. The legislation is branded as targeting noncitizen criminals like the man who murdered Georgia nursing student Laken Riley last year. Unfortunately, the legislation misses the target. The federal government’s immigration enforcement system already prioritizes the detention and removal of serious criminals. Unfortunately, President-elect Trump will rescind those policies, letting officers arrest anyone here illegally regardless of whether they threaten Americans. The LRA could be a perfect opportunity for Congress to bind Trump’s hands and force him to prioritize criminals. But the LRA is a sloppy bill. The LRA’s first section requires the…

The Dodgers aren’t content to build the best starting rotation in baseball this winter. They’re trying to do the same with their bullpen. According to multiple reports, the Dodgers have reached agreement on a four-year, $72 million contract with free agent left-hander Tanner Scott, the best reliever available on this year’s free-agent market. As has become usual in the Dodgers’ recent deals, the contract includes a big signing bonus ($21 million) and deferred salary ($20 million), lowering the immediate payroll hit for the Dodgers while giving the player tax advantages. The 30-year-old Scott joins a bullpen group that already includes…

With what Coach Jim Hiller called an “unsuccessful” five-game trek in their rearview mirror, the Kings pulled up for a pair of home games, beginning with Monday’s battle against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Kings slipped up, 3-2 in overtime, to those same Penguins in Pittsburgh back on Dec. 17, when Sidney Crosby’s line dominated the third period and his running mate Rickard Rakell scored three-on-three in OT to cap a comeback for the Pens.On Saturday in Seattle, where the Kings fell to 2-3-0 on their away swing, they had the opposite dynamic. What center Phillip Danault called a “sleepy” first period…
