By Alejandro Lazo and Rachel Becker | CalMatters California lawmakers on Monday approved one of the most substantial rollbacks of the state’s signature environmental review law in decades, including a controversial exemption that would allow high-tech manufacturing plants to be built in industrial zones with no environmental review. The changes to the California Environmental Quality Act were embedded in a last-minute budget bill that sailed through the Senate and the Assembly. The new law exempts nine types of projects from environmental reviews: child care centers, health clinics, food banks, farmworker housing, broadband, wildfire prevention, water infrastructure, public parks or trails…
By AMANDA SEITZ, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — New Trump administration rules that give millions of people a shorter timeframe to sign up for the Affordable Care Act’s health care coverage are facing a legal challenge from Democratic mayors around the country. The rules, rolled out last month, reverse a Biden-era effort to expand access to the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance, commonly called “Obamacare” or the ACA. The previous Democratic administration expanded the enrollment window for the coverage, which led to record enrollment. The Department of Health and Human Services rolled out a series of new restrictions for Obamacare…
By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer LONDON — Coco Gauff became just the third woman in the Open era to lose in the first round at Wimbledon right after winning the championship at the French Open, eliminated, 7-6 (3), 6-1, by unseeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine on Tuesday night. The second-ranked Gauff made mistake after mistake at Court No. 1, finishing with just six winners and a total of 29 unforced errors that included nine double-faults. “Dayana started off playing strong,” Gauff said. “I couldn’t find my footing out there today.” She joined another highly seeded American, No. 3 Jessica…
By COLLIN BINKLEY and BIANCA VÁZQUEZ TONESS, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is withholding more than $6 billion in federal grants for afterschool and summer programs, English language instruction, adult literacy and more as part of a review to ensure grants align with President Donald Trump’s priorities. The move leaves states and schools in limbo as they budget for programs this summer and in the upcoming school year, introducing new uncertainty about when — or if — they will receive the money. It also sets the stage for a clash with Democrats, who say the administration is…
By KEN SWEET, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Navy Federal Credit Union will no longer have to refund $80 million to servicemen and women for illegally charging them overdraft fees on their accounts, after the President Donald Trump-led Consumer Financial Protection Bureau moved to dismiss the case. It’s the latest example of how the Trump-led CFPB is undoing much of the work it did under President Biden, even in instances where the bad actors agreed to provide redress and compensation to victims. The case dates from late 2024 and deals with an issue known as “authorized positive overdraft fees,”…
By COLLIN BINKLEY, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The University of Pennsylvania has agreed to ban transgender women from its women’s sports teams to resolve a federal civil rights case that found the school violated the rights of female athletes. The U.S. Education Department announced the voluntary agreement Tuesday. The case focused on Lia Thomas, the transgender swimmer who last competed for the Ivy League school in Philadelphia in 2022, when she became the first openly transgender athlete to win a Division I title. It’s part of the Trump administration’s broader attempt to remove transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s…
This spring, the Kings had two different general managers with one shared goal: re-signing defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Yet neither Rob Blake, who conveyed near total confidence that an extension would get done, nor Ken Holland, who succeeded Blake and won four Stanley Cups in Detroit, could accomplish that top-line goal. Gavrikov, 29, signed a contract for $49 million over 7 years with the New York Rangers on Tuesday, leaving the Kings with a gaping hole in their defense corps above the one left by the trade of Jordan Spence to the Ottawa Senators for draft picks last Saturday. The Kings…
With prices leveling off and more homes on the market, buyers now are more likely to walk away from a deal when they hit a snag before closing. As a result, one out of every six Southern California transactions fell apart in May, killing 2,261 home sales, according to Redfin, the online brokerage. It was the second straight month that local cancellation rates increased from the year before. In April, 16.5% of Southern California home sales fell through, followed by a 15.6% cancellation rate in May, up in both months from around 15% a year earlier. Breakdowns by county show…
Seven members of a burglary group suspected of hitting a Glendale jewelry store in May were caught while trying to break into a La Verne jewelry store over the weekend, police said. An eighth suspect eluded capture. Authorities believe the suspects, who are foreign nationals, were involved in similar crimes in the United States and their own countries, but didn’t say what countries they are from or release any details on other crimes. A burglar or burglars cut a hole on the roof of Bidrussian Jewelry in the 1100 block of South Glendale Avenue in Glendale on May 27, ransacked…
