By FATIMA HUSSEIN WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican tax bill approved by the U.S. House of Representatives would cost the poorest Americans roughly $1,600 a year while increasing the income of the wealthiest households by an average of $12,000 annually, according to a new analysis released Thursday by the Congressional Budget Office. EL SEGUNDO — What if your star quarterback just … isn’t a star? In terms of a limelight-loving, big-box-office ticket, capital-P Personality? Watching the film of Chargers QB Justin Herbert giving curt, calorie-free answers at his news conference after Wednesday’s minicamp session, I actually wondered for the first time whether those folks had been onto something in 2020, when they argued that the eventual No. 6 overall pick was too introverted to be the face of an NFL franchise. It had always seemed a silly insinuation, I thought, because his numbers at Oregon were plenty loud. The Ducks went 27-8…
President Donald Trump’s federalization of the California National Guard amid his administration’s immigration enforcement actions around Los Angeles, and the subsequent protests that followed, was “illegal,” a federal judge ruled Thursday evening. U.S District Judge Charles R. Breyer granted Gov. Gavin Newsom’s request for a temporary restraining order after a hearing earlier in the day. The ruling said the court “must determine whether the President followed the congressionally mandated procedure for his actions,” the order said. “He did not.” “His actions were illegal — both exceeding the scope of his statutory authority and violating the Tenth Amendment to the United…
By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer OAKMONT, Pa. — J.J. Spaun is still new enough to the U.S. Open, and a newcomer to the brute that is Oakmont, that he was prepared for anything Thursday. He wound up with a clean card and a one-shot lead on an opening day that delivered just about everything. Scottie Scheffler had more bogeys in one round than he made had the entire tournament when he won the Memorial. He shot a 73, his highest start ever in a U.S. Open, four shots worse than when he made his Open debut at Oakmont as…

By JEFFREY COLLINS COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Republican member of the South Carolina House who prosecutors say used the screen name “joebidennnn69” has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of distributing sexual abuse material involving children. RJ May was arrested at his Lexington County home after a lengthy investigation and was ordered Thursday by a federal judge to remain jailed until his trial. The three-term Republican is accused of using “joebidennnn69” to exchange 220 different files of toddlers and young children involved in sex acts on the Kik social media network for about five days in spring 2024,…
The Angels will promote top prospect Christian Moore to the majors on Friday in Baltimore, a source confirmed on Thursday afternoon. Moore, 22, was hitting .350 with a .999 OPS in 20 games at Triple-A Salt Lake. He began the season at Double-A Rocket City, hitting .234 with a .665 OPS in his first 34 games. It seems likely that Moore will get regular playing time at second base, which is the only position he’s played in the minors. The Angels have struggled to get production out of that position because Luis Rengifo (.498 OPS) has not been productive. They’ve…
I didn’t run for office because I had political ambitions. I ran because my son RJ doesn’t have a voice. He has cerebral palsy with spastic quadriplegia. He cannot walk. He cannot speak. He cannot eat without a feeding tube. Every moment of his life requires full-time care and attention. And every day, my wife Christine and I do everything we can to give him a life filled with love, dignity, and safety. We didn’t ask to become caregivers, but we stepped into that role with our whole hearts because that’s what love demands. What we didn’t expect was how…

EL SEGUNDO — The Chargers concluded their mandatory, three-day minicamp on Thursday afternoon at their gleaming, nearly 1-year-old practice facility. Here’s some of what we learned, what we heard and what comes next after the veterans were given a break until training camp begins July 17: WHAT, RASHAWN WORRY? Left tackle Rashawn Slater said he had no concerns about when his anticipated contract extension might be completed. He said he arrived as scheduled this week for minicamp because it was important to be on the field, in the weight room and the locker room with his teammates. “I don’t want…
