OMAHA, Neb. — John Savage left Omaha last month with a mindset similar to the one he came back with this week – winning the next tournament. This time it just happens to be the last one of the season. The longtime UCLA head coach brings the 15th-seeded Bruins to the Men’s College World Series – the program’s first appearance since 2013 – beginning with Saturday’s 11 a.m. PDT opener against Murray State. And he’s hoping the Bruins can leave the same way they did 12 years ago – as national champions. “It’s been a long time since we have…

By TARA COPP, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The tanks are staged and ready to roll. Fencing and barriers are up. Protective metal plating has been laid out on Washington’s streets. And more than 6,000 troops are poised to march near the National Mall to honor the Army’s 250th anniversary on Saturday, which happens to be President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. With preparations well in hand, one big unknown is the weather. Rain is in the forecast, so there is a chance the parade could be interrupted by thunderstorms. The world according to Jim: • Is it surprising at all that tickets for the FIFA Club World Cup tournament, which begins Saturday night in Miami and will feature 48 pool-play games in 11 cities, are not exactly hot sellers? It may be an example of greedy behavior receiving its just reward. … • Background: This once was a small tournament, held usually in December somewhere in the United Arab Emirates, that involved the champions of seven regions including CONCACAF (whose representative usually came from Liga MX). It did crown a world champion, but the process was skewed in favor…
NEW YORK (AP) — More than 1.15 million power banks are under recall across the U.S. after some fires and explosions were reported by consumers. According to a Thursday notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, electronics maker Anker Innovations is recalling certain “PowerCore 10000” power banks because the lithium-ion battery inside can overheat. An overheating battery can lead to “melting of plastic components, smoke, and fire hazards,” Anker wrote in an accompanying announcement. The company added that it was conducting this recall “out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our customers.” According to the…
By MICHELLE L. PRICE, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Eight years after President Donald Trump was dazzled by a grand military parade down the Champs-Élysées in Paris, he is finally getting a chance to try to top the spectacle. His long-delayed dream is expected to be realized Saturday with an extravaganza of American military might featuring tanks and other armored vehicles rolling through the nation’s capital, thousands of soldiers marching the streets and military aircraft flying overhead. In a final flourish, an elite parachute team is to jump from above the White House, land near Trump and hand him an…
As law enforcement prepared to enter a seventh day of sometimes-violent protests, the National Guard and U.S. Marines will stay put – at least for now. President Donald Trump won an appeal late Thursday, June 12, to at least temporarily thwart Gov. Gavin Newsom’s courtroom win earlier in the day to take back control of the Guard. A federal judge had ruled Trump’s federalization of troops was “illegal,” providing the governor a short-lived win. A hearing on the issue was scheduled for Tuesday, June 17. Immigration-enforcement raids continued Thursday, prompting one Irvine councilmember to take to Instagram to encourage undocumented…
By KIMBERLY KINDY and AMANDA SEITZ, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration this week provided deportation officials with personal data — including the immigration status — on millions of Medicaid enrollees, a move that could make it easier to locate people as part of his sweeping immigration crackdown. An internal memo and emails obtained by The Associated Press show that Medicaid officials unsuccessfully sought to block the data transfer, citing legal and ethical concerns. Nevertheless, two top advisers to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ordered the dataset handed over to the Department of Homeland Security, the…
SACRAMENTO—One of the dumbest memes I’ve seen recently shows a photo of a Los Angeles rioter waving a Mexican flag with the tagline, “California 2025.” Underneath that image is a photo of young, wholesome folks leaning against a Mustang with their surfboards at a Southern California beach with the words, “California 1965.” It’s absurd for various reasons, but it’s laughable the meme picks 1965 for the comparison. That’s the same year as the “Watts Rebellion” or “Watts Riots.” (The differing titles are a testament to the ongoing culture-war battle over the use of language.) Sparked by frustrations about police brutality…
Rivers of ink have been spilled in the last few days highlighting various perspectives on immigration raids, protests and riots in Los Angeles and other cities. But one point of view has gone largely ignored so far: that of the legal immigrants who are hurt by the disruption created by the raids and protests. Legal immigrants seeking to obtain green cards, work permits, and other key immigration benefits and protections are having their processes delayed and their lives disrupted due to the closure of federal buildings caused by the protests. This is a major problem for individual immigrants — one…
