By NICHOLAS RICCARDI Last weekend, President Donald Trump took the rare step of mobilizing the National Guard, and then the U.S. Marines, sending them into Los Angeles over the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom quickly took the president to court for unilaterally calling in the military to clamp down on protests against the administration’s immigration policies. Trump followed that up with a campaign-style rally at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where uniformed soldiers cheered as he slammed former President Joe Biden, Newsom and other Democrats — raising concerns the president was using the military as a political prop.…

Last year’s Proposition 36, which increased penalties on certain drug and property offenses, did so by convincing millions of voters that their initiative would help those struggling with addiction. Yet when the proposition took effect in December, there was still no plan for expanding California’s already-strained drug treatment infrastructure. Prop. 36 simply pointed to two existing funding streams as a source of treatment dollars: 1) Proposition 47 grants, which reinvest the prison savings generated by a 2014 law easing penalties on minor drug and property offenses; and 2) AB 109 funding, which accompanied a 2011 law aimed at addressing prison…

Prosecutors in Arizona declined to file criminal charges against a Riverside County couple whose infant daughter died after falling ill as they spent an unusually hot day boating on Lake Havasu in 2024. The death of 4-month-old Tanna Rae Wroblewski prompted the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department to investigate the actions of her parents, Matthew, a Riverside police detective, and Alyssa Wroblewski. After a medical examiner said Tanna died from complications of heat exposure, pathologists hired by Wroblewski attorney Jack Litwak concluded Tanna died after accidentally ingesting breast milk into her lungs. The Mohave County Attorney’s Office then consulted with two…
By HOLLY RAMER A political consultant who sent artificial intelligence-generated robocalls mimicking former President Joe Biden to New Hampshire Democrats last year was acquitted Friday of voter suppression and impersonating a candidate. Steven Kramer, 56, of New Orleans, admitted orchestrating a message sent to thousands of voters two days before the state’s Jan. 23, 2024, presidential primary. Recipients heard an AI-generated voice similar to the Democratic president’s that used his catchphrase “What a bunch of malarkey” and, as prosecutors alleged, suggested that voting in the primary would preclude voters from casting ballots in November. “It’s important that you save your…
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams signed veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal Friday. Humphries, a longtime starter for the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals, will provide depth and insurance on the Rams’ offensive line behind starting left tackle Alaric Jackson. Jackson agreed to a three-year, $57 million free-agent deal to stay in Los Angeles this spring, but the NFL Network reported this week that Jackson is dealing with a reoccurrence of the blood clots that ended his 2022 season. Humphries spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Cardinals, who drafted him in the first…
By Dana Hull | Bloomberg Tesla Inc. sued a former engineer with the company’s highly secretive Optimus program, accusing him of stealing confidential information about the humanoid robot and setting up a rival startup in Silicon Valley. Zhongjie “Jay” Li worked at Tesla between August 2022 and September 2024, according to a complaint filed in a San Francisco Federal Court late Wednesday. Li worked on “advanced robotic hand sensors — and was entrusted with some of the most sensitive technical data in the program,” Tesla’s lawyers said in the complaint. By KRYSTA FAURIA, OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ and JOHN SEEWER, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a week of protests over federal immigration raids, about 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles and will protect federal property and personnel, a military commander said Friday. Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 who is overseeing the 4,700 troops deployed, said that the Marines have finished training on civil disturbance and the first batch moved to a federal building west of downtown Los Angeles where they will start their operations at noon local time. The development comes a day after…
