By RONALD BLUM NEW YORK (AP) — Metropolitan Opera season attendance dropped slightly following the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown that coincided with a decrease in tourists to New York. The Met sold 72% of capacity, matching 2023-24 and down from its 75% projection. “We were on track to continue to improve,” Met general manager Peter Gelb said Friday. “We were disappointed by the sales in the last two months of the season — our projections were much higher and I attribute the fact that we didn’t achieve our sales goals to a significant drop in tourism.” New York City Tourism…
BALTIMORE — Christian Moore’s first full professional season has already been educational. The Angels’ 2024 first-round draft pick got off to a rough start in Double-A, and then gradually began picking up his performance, including a torrid start to his time in Triple-A. As he prepared for his major league debut after 79 minor-league games, Moore said he’s learned from the failure early in the season. “I think when you play this game every day, you figure out what type of player you are, figure out what type of person you are,” Moore said before hitting ninth in his major…

Alan Vargas, a 24-year-old stockroom worker in Corona, says there is a saying in the immigrant community, “sin papales, sin miedo”: no papers, no fear. But the ICE raids in Southern California have challenged that mantra. Not only have wanted criminals who are in the U.S. illegally been arrested and deported, but undocumented, though otherwise law-abiding, workers have been targeted as well by masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in unmarked vans. Vargas said he is one of the few in his immediate and extended family with legal status, and the family is concerned what the federal government will do…
California’s senators should block Bill Essayli from getting a full term as U.S. attorney for much of Southern California, according to a coalition that wants the Golden State’s senators to take action. Critics want to prevent Essayli, a Republican and former Inland Empire assemblymember, from being confirmed by the U.S. Senate. A conservative firebrand and supporter of President Donald Trump, Essayli resigned from the legislature in April to become the U.S. Department of Justice’s top lawyer on an interim basis in a district encompassing Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The district,…
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Corey Perry knew from his seat on the bench he wanted to say something. His Edmonton Oilers looked flat, outclassed by the defending champion Florida Panthers, and were in danger of a third consecutive loss in their Stanley Cup Final rematch that would have put them on the brink of losing once again. In the locker room at the first intermission, he offered some words of wisdom. “It wasn’t wisdom. It was just honesty,” Perry said Friday. “Had to realize where we were at the moment and just kind of look ourselves in the mirror and…
By Ian King | Bloomberg Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su said her company’s latest AI processors can challenge Nvidia Corp. chips in a market she now expects to soar past $500 billion in the next three years. The new installments in AMD’s MI350 chip series are faster than Nvidia counterparts and represent major gains over earlier versions, Su said at a company event Thursday in San Jose, California. The MI355 chips, which started shipping earlier this month, are 35 times faster than predecessors, she said. Though AMD remains a distant second to Nvidia in AI accelerators…
By NICHOLAS RICCARDI Last weekend, President Donald Trump took the rare step of mobilizing the National Guard, and then the U.S. Marines, sending them into Los Angeles over the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom quickly took the president to court for unilaterally calling in the military to clamp down on protests against the administration’s immigration policies. Trump followed that up with a campaign-style rally at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where uniformed soldiers cheered as he slammed former President Joe Biden, Newsom and other Democrats — raising concerns the president was using the military as a political prop.…

Last year’s Proposition 36, which increased penalties on certain drug and property offenses, did so by convincing millions of voters that their initiative would help those struggling with addiction. Yet when the proposition took effect in December, there was still no plan for expanding California’s already-strained drug treatment infrastructure. Prop. 36 simply pointed to two existing funding streams as a source of treatment dollars: 1) Proposition 47 grants, which reinvest the prison savings generated by a 2014 law easing penalties on minor drug and property offenses; and 2) AB 109 funding, which accompanied a 2011 law aimed at addressing prison…
