SAN FRANCISCO — For most of the week-long trip to Milwaukee and San Francisco, it looked like the All-Star break couldn’t get here soon enough for the Dodgers. As it turned out, they actually needed to postpone it a little bit. Two outs away from reaching the midsummer pause with a two-game winning streak, Tanner Scott gave up a two-run pinch-hit home run to Luis Matos. It was Scott’s seventh blown save this season, second this week, but the Dodgers rebooted the winning streak with three runs in the 11th inning to beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-2, Sunday afternoon.…
In early June, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) descended on Southern California. Since then, Californians have witnessed masked agents raid Home Depots and car washes, aggressively tackle gardeners, and level guns at bystanders for taking photos. The latest scene came on Monday, July 7, when federal agents showed up at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles in what can only be described as a military-style parade. Agents in fatigues leapt from armored trucks, sealing off nearby streets and diverting traffic. Mounted agents patrolled the park, guns slung across their chests. After an hour, they dispersed—apparently without making any arrests. Monday’s ICE…

LOS ANGELES — She started off cautiously, even tentatively, settling onto the back of a train of 21 runners in the Sunset Tour 5,000-meter run chasing the neon blue and green pacing lights around the Jack Kemp Stadium track Saturday night. Two years ago, Alicia Monson, the American record holder at both 5,000 and 10,000 meters, would have been out front, hundreds of meters ahead of many of the women in Saturday’s field. But there was Monson now, in her first race in 16 months, running in unfamiliar territory, the back of the pack, 20, 30 meters behind the leaders,…
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Grace Kim always dreamed of winning a major on the LPGA Tour. What happened Sunday in a wild final hour at the Evian Championship was beyond her imagination. “I don’t know how it happened, really,” Kim said after an eagle-birdie-eagle finish to win on the second playoff hole against Jeeno Thitikul. A final round at Evian Resort that nearly saw Lottie Woad become the first amateur to win a major in 58 years ended with Kim standing upright after her 12-foot eagle putt dropped, with her hand over her mouth, motionless as she tried to digest what…
CHATEAUROUX, France — Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier won the ninth stage of the Tour de France in a mass sprint after Mathieu van der Poel spent the whole day at the front before being caught by the chasing pack less than a kilometer from the finish. There was no significant change in the overall standings and three-time Tour champion Tadej Pogačar kept the race leader’s yellow jersey. Sunday’s stage headed into central France on a 174-kilometer (108-mile) flat stretch for sprinters. But Van der Poel, a one-day classics specialist with a flamboyant style of riding, almost foiled their plans. The…
San Francisco isn’t the only California city to adopt an unrealistic road-safety fad called Vision Zero, but it did so early enough that we can now analyze the results of the program. To put it simply, it’s a bust. As the city’s grand jury reported in June, the program was “adopted in San Francisco in 2014 with the aim of eliminating traffic deaths by 2024” but “has failed by its own metrics. Instead of getting to zero fatalities, 2024 marked the deadliest year since 2007.” Santa Ana and Los Angeles County have also adopted these programs, but they’re still far…
Ready for even higher homeowner insurance rates and gas prices to fill up your SUV? In an interview with the Bay Area News Group, former California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones called for insurance companies to “bring lawsuits to recover money associated with the oil and gas companies’ contributions to climate change.” This was his idea for how Californians can deal with soaring home insurance prices. Jones blamed insurers for not bringing the lawsuits themselves. “[T]hey can and should bring lawsuits to recover money associated with the oil and gas companies’ contributions to climate change,” he said. “Why are they not…

Abigail Adams, America’s second First Lady, famously urged her husband at the Continental Congress in 1776 to “remember the ladies,” entreating him to be “more more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” That same spirit — to broaden our embrace of liberty with each generation — has marked the arc of American progress. From immigrants to Black Americans, women to Native Americans, the nation has moved, however imperfectly, toward equal opportunity for all. Most recently, this mentality led to the Obergefell vs. Hodges decision and the Respect for Marriage Act recognizing the right to marriage and adoption between…
