By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Artificial intelligence technology bellwether Nvidia overcame a wave of tariff-driven turbulence to deliver another quarter of robust growth amid feverish demand for its high-powered chips that are making computers seem more human. The results announced Wednesday for the February-April period came against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s on-again, off-again trade war that has whipsawed Nvidia and other Big Tech companies riding AI mania to propel their revenue and stock prices upward. But Trump’s tariffs — many of which have been reduced or temporarily suspended – hammered the market values of…
By JOSH FUNK The problems that disrupted flights at New Jersey’s largest airport this spring could be repeated anywhere across the country, so Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is trying to sell Congress on his plan to overhaul the nation’s air traffic control system that will cost “tens of billions.” Duffy provided an update Wednesday on the repairs and staffing efforts that are underway to help eliminate the problems affecting Newark Liberty International Airport, which has been running more smoothly in the past few weeks since the airlines started to cut the number of flights they operate there. And Duffy emphasized…

By AUDREY McAVOY HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s governor signed legislation Tuesday that boosts a tax imposed on hotel room and vacation rental stays in order to raise money to address eroding shorelines, wildfires and other consequences of climate change. The signing, which comes nearly two years after a Maui wildfire killed 102 people and wiped out almost all of Lahaina town, marks the nation’s first such levy to help cope with a warming planet. Officials estimate the tax will generate nearly $100 million annually. The money will be used for projects like replenishing sand on eroding Waikiki beaches, promoting the…
By BEN FINLEY The Trump administration has asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit over Kilmar Abrego Garcia ’s mistaken deportation to El Salvador, arguing the court lacks jurisdiction because he’s no longer in the United States. The request for dismissal late Tuesday was a procedural move by the U.S. government, which was required to respond to Abrego Garcia’s lawsuit within 60 days. U.S. attorneys reiterated their arguments from late March against his return. The government’s filing is the latest development in a case that has carried on for two months without any discernible movement toward resolution, despite a…
CLEVELAND – Mother Nature let the Dodgers down. So did their bullpen. Rain was supposed to soak Cleveland all day Wednesday. But the forecast kept changing with the storm’s arrival pushed back far enough for the Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians to play their afternoon game. There was only some scattered light showers during Wednesday’s game. An all-day rain would have been better for the Dodgers. They blew a three-run lead, Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia combining to give up five runs in the eighth inning of a 7-4 loss to the Guardians. Lou Trivino gave up the first run of…
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Two pigeons sneaked aboard a Delta Air Lines plane, delaying the flight twice. The airline confirmed that the pigeons got aboard a flight Saturday that was leaving Minneapolis for Madison, Wisconsin. A passenger who shot video of another man using his jacket to capture one of the birds told news outlets that the plane had to return to the gate twice because of birds flying around the cabin. Tom Caw said the first bird was captured by a ground crew. The second time, a passenger stepped in. “Pilot said when he radioed the control tower about us…

CLEVELAND – For much of his time at shortstop, it has seemed like a temporary assignment for Mookie Betts. Originally pressed into service at the position late in spring training 2024, the Dodgers moved the six-time Gold Glove winner back to right field for the final two months of the season after he returned from a fractured hand. Tommy Edman or Miguel Rojas started all of the Dodgers’ postseason games at shortstop. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts doesn’t see a similar move as necessary this year. “I don’t see us making a change even as we did last year. I don’t…
By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve officials agreed earlier this month to hold off on any interest-rate moves while they evaluated the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on inflation, unemployment, and the broader economy. According to minutes from their May 6-7 meeting, released Wednesday, “almost all” of the 19 officials that participate in the Fed’s meetings on policy saw a risk that “inflation could prove to be more persistent than expected.” The policymakers showed greater concerns about higher inflation than rising unemployment, the minutes showed, a key reason they left rates unchanged. Their decision flew in the…
