THE GAME: The Angels built an early three-run lead behind Jorge Soler’s hot bat then survived a ninth-inning rally from the Chicago White Sox for a 3-2 win in a Cactus League game on Friday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. The Angels have an additional game Friday night against the Dodgers in Glendale (5 p.m. PT).
PITCHING REPORT: In Tempe, left-hander Reid Detmers pitched three scoreless innings. He gave up a single and walked two. He struck out two. Detmers, who is competing for the No. 5 starter spot, has allowed one run in five innings in two starts this spring. Detmers said he felt more comfortable out of the stretch than the windup, and also needed to improve his fastball command, but he was pleased overall. “All my pitches feel really good right now, so I’m not too worried if something is a little off,” he said. “The slider feels really good, probably the best of them all.” … Left-hander Brock Burke pitched scoreless inning, working around one hit. … In Glendale, left-hander Yusei Kikuchi gave up two runs in 2⅔ innings in his first start of the spring. In the first inning, he gave up a leadoff homer to Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani and Kikuchi are both products of the same high school in Japan. “I kind of fell behind on him and threw the fastball down the middle,” Kikuchi said through his interpreter. “A player of his caliber you can’t get away with that.” Kikuchi gave up another run in the first and was pulled with two outs when his pitch count reached 26. Kikuchi returned to the mound and retired all six hitters – including Ohtani – in the next two innings, with 21 pitches. “All in all, I think it went well today,” Kikuchi said. … Right-hander Chase Silseth gave up one run in 2⅔ innings. Three of Silseth’s six strikeouts were against Dodgers starters, including Ohtani. Silseth threw 24 splitters among his 46 pitches, a much higher percentage than usual. The Dodgers whiffed on six of their seven swings at the pitch. … Left-hander Victor Gonzalez made his spring debut with a scoreless inning. The veteran reliever arrived in camp late because of visa issues.
HITTING REPORT: In Tempe, Jorge Soler hit his second home run of the spring, a deep drive to center field on an 0-and-2 count. He also lined a double off the fence in left. In his third trip, he lined out to left field. Soler is 5 for 10 this spring. … Travis d’Arnaud lined a double into left center. … Mickey Moniak doubled down the right field line. His double followed the d’Arnaud and Soler doubles in the first inning, producing two runs. … Luis Rengifo went hitless in two at-bats in his first game of the spring. He got off to a late start because of an illness. … In Glendale, Jo Adell hit a grand slam in the second hitting, his first hit of the spring. Adell was behind 0-and-2 before fouling off a couple of two-strike pitches and homering on a 2-and-2 pitch. … Yoán Moncada drew three more walks. Although he doesn’t yet have a hit, he’s up to five walks in seven plate appearances this spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Mike Trout made his second start in his new position, and he finally got some action. After not handling a ball in three innings in his debut, Trout caught a line drive that was over his head and toward the line. He also caught a routine pop-up and cleanly fielded a single on one hop. … Rengifo, who was playing third base, reached over the wall to make a catch of a foul ball.
