Grant helping UCR digitize photo slides
Work by UC Riverside’s Department of the History of Art and the Society of Architectural Historians to preserve architectural images from around the world will soon be available in a digital archive.
The UCR team, led by Sonja Sekely-Rowland, is using part of an ongoing $340,000 grant to digitize photo slides of buildings considered threatened by loss, destruction or environmental damage. The slides date to the 1980s Middle East, Mongolia and China.
The grant — provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities Collections and Reference Resources — will provide money through 2027, expanding the ongoing Color Film Emergency Project, or CFEP.
The effort at UC Riverside is being led by Sonja Sekely-Rowland, a curator at UCR’s Department of the History of Art. She’s working with former curators from UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine and eight other universities in the U.S.
“Our work on the CFEP began in 2016 in response to earlier research indicating SAH member collections totaling more than 1.2 million slides in need of care,” Sekely-Rowland said.
The photo slides were captured by 20th-century scholars, preservationists design practitioners, and photographers, according to UC Riverside.

Layoffs hit theme park: Legoland is laying off nearly 100 employees at the Carlsbad park, according to a filing with the California Employment Development Department. Most are performers — 87 out of a total 97 job cuts, our peers at the San Diego Union Tribune reported on Friday. Others jobs being cut included stage managers, events assistant manager and production specialist. “The decision to reduce the size of our entertainment team was undoubtedly difficult, but these changes will allow the Resort to operate more flexibly and responsively in a competitive market,” the park told the Union-Tribune.
FAIR Plan wildfire claims tip balance: Claims from Los Angeles County wildfire victims have apparently exceeded $900 million for the state’s insurer of the last resort. This means the state plan can now tap “reinsurance” payments from backup providers, according to a story penned by real estate reporter Jeff Collins. The FAIR Plan earlier said it can only tap into reinsurance — essentially insurance for insurance companies — once it pays its first $900 million in claims.
Movement on Starbucks contract: The coffee chain and its union will bring in an outside mediator for contract negotiations, as both sides try to revive stalled talks and reach a landmark deal. The company and Workers United, which has a number of stores trying to unionize in Southern California, “have made progress over the last nine months of bargaining, and we are committed to continuing to work together,” Bloomberg News reported. The union is “optimistic that Starbucks will move off of their fixed position on wage and benefits improvements in this next phase of negotiations,” barista and bargaining delegate Michelle Eisen said in a separate statement from Workers United.
