Construction of a new $20 million public safety building for the San Bernardino school district has started and is set to be completed in 2026.

The 17,140 square-foot James Ramos Center for Public Safety will be the new headquarters for the San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department.
The building will replace the current headquarters on Base Line Street, a mile north of the planned command post.
It will serve as the hub for school district police and will include a 24-hour communications center, emergency response coordination areas and space for staff training and student programs.
Construction will be at the old Santa Fe Bank building at 701 N. E St. in San Bernardino, across the parking lot from the district’s headquarters and an anticipated Welcoming Resource Center. It will be down the street from the San Bernardino Police Department.
The Welcoming Center will be a one-stop shop where families can get assistance with enrollment and registration, but also services aimed at nurturing and supporting the holistic development of students.
The public safety center is part of the district’s Vision 2030: SBCUSD SHINES, “a strategic plan that prioritizes safe, welcoming learning environments where all students can thrive.” The center will provide internship and career pathway opportunities for public-service careers.
On May 20, the board unanimously agreed to name the facility for Assemblymember James Ramos, D-San Bernardino, because of his “lasting impact on the community and his deep-rooted commitment to the District’s students, families and staff,” a district news release states.
Ramos is chair of the California State Assembly Committee on Budget, Subcommittee No. 6 on Public Safety, which oversees public safety efforts statewide.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students has always been one of my highest priorities,” Ramos said in the release. “A secure learning environment is essential for our young people to thrive, and this facility stands as a symbol of that commitment.”
