Three Riverside men and a boy were arrested Sunday night, June 1, after an argument and physical fight escalated into a shooting that left a man with a foot injury near the Newport Beach Pier, authorities said.
Officers were called to West Oceanfront and 23rd Street, just north of the pier, about 7:40 p.m. and found a man had been shot at least once in the foot, Newport Beach police Sgt. Steve Oberon said Monday.
One of the suspects was detained at the scene, Oberon said, while the others jumped into a vehicle and fled.
Investigators learned that the victim fought with at least one of the suspects when he pulled out a handgun and fired three times, Oberon said. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Why the suspects argued and fought with the victim was not known.
The suspects’ vehicle was spotted by officers in a Huntington Beach Police Department helicopter in the Costa Mesa area and Costa Mesa officers pulled it over near the 55 Freeway and Fair Drive, Oberon said. The three suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
The handgun believed to have been used in the shooting also was found, though it was unclear whether it was found in the vehicle or on the suspect who was detained at the scene, Oberon said.
The three adult suspects are all 18-years old, Oberon said. One was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, a second on suspicion of conspiracy and carrying a loaded firearm and a third on suspicion of conspiracy.
The juvenile, 17, also was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, Oberon said.
