ARLINGTON, Texas — It’s a girl.
Shohei Ohtani announced the arrival of his daughter on Instagram on Saturday afternoon, offering no details. When he announced his wife Mamiko’s pregnancy in December (also on his Instagram account), it included pink baby pajamas – an early clue they were expecting a girl.
“Welcome to the Ohtani Family!” the proud papa posted on Instagram. “I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter. To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.
“I would also like to thank the Dodgers organization, my teammates and the fans for their constant support and kind words of encouragement.
“I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals and everyone who dedicated their support to us up until this wonderful day.”
Ohtani did not travel to Texas with the Dodgers for their weekend series against the Rangers. He was placed on the paternity leave list Friday. Players can miss up to three days while on the list.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there was “a chance” Ohtani would rejoin the Dodgers before the end of the weekend. But it’s more likely he will join them in Chicago on Tuesday after an off day Monday.
