Jason Lee scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half as the San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball team shot out to a big early advantage on the way to a low-scoring 68-40 victory over West Valley on Thursday night in the California Community College Athletic Association Tournament quarterfinals.
“Defense (and) we did it together,” said Lee, sophomore guard. “We work for this every day so this is what we’re here for.”
Lee was 3 for 5 from 3-point range with four rebounds, three assists and three steals for San Bernardino Valley College, which came into the game averaging a state-best 94.5 points per game.
“We’re obviously a high-scoring team but we’re also a great defensive team,” SBVC coach Quincy Brewer said. “All that matters is that we have more points than them.”
SBVC (27-5 overall) has won 10 consecutive games and are unbeaten in all of February and March. The Wolverines take on the Fullerton — a 68-53 winner over Cosumnes River River on Thursday night — in the CCCAA semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m.
“We feel like we’ve got so much more to show,” Lee said.
SBVC jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a fast-break dunk by Jason Hilliard, a turnaround jumper by Lee, a 3-pointer from Khemanni Davis and back-to-back 3s from Lee.
“That just boosted us,” Lee said.
West Valley, the defending state champion, climbed back to within single digits late in the first half on three 3-pointers from Jake Davis, but SBVC went into halftime holding a 36-25 lead.
“A good team like that (and) a good team like that, you know that they’re going to make a run at you so we knew that it wasn’t over,” Brewer said.
SBVC opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Shadale Knight. Lee hit another turnaround jumper in the lane, and Davis sank his second deep ball to push the lead to 19 points. Lee moved into third in SBVC’s record book with an assist to Hilliard in the second half.
“That’s fire. That’s hot,” Lee said. “It’s a blessing to be here.”
The Wolverines went on a 12-0 run — capped by Knight finding Hilliard underneath for a big dunk — and led by as many as 30 points down the stretch.
Davis was 5 of 9 from the field and totaled a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds.
Darius Carr produced a steal and a dunk in the final 10 minutes but otherwise had an off night.
The state’s eight-leading scorer at 22.8 points per game, Carr shot just 3 for 14 from the field and finished with six points and five steals.
“Nobody can play a perfect game every game,” Brewer said. “(West Valley’s) defense was built to stop him, but I liked his unselfishness and his defensive commitment.”
West Valley (27-4) turned the ball over 27 times in the game and shot only 31% (13 of 42) from the field. The 40 points by the Vikings Thursday night was the lowest scoring output for the program since a 71-40 loss to Fullerton in the 2023 CCCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
