Chino police shot and injured a 47-year-old Rialto man accused of assaulting his girlfriend, crashing into multiple police cars and leading officers on a high-speed chase before a stand-off that ended in the shooting.
Officers responded at 12:15 a.m. to the 14000 block of Monte Vista Avenue in Chino, where a victim reported that her boyfriend tried to force her into a vehicle and then slammed her head into a light pole and hit her multiple times, according to a Chino Police Department statement.
Her boyfriend, Jose Martinez, then got her into the vehicle, but she escaped shortly after and was taken to a hospital, police said.
Around 11:30 a.m., detectives found Martinez in Fontana and attempted a traffic stop, but Martinez crashed his white SUV into two police cars and drove away, police said. Officers chased Martinez’s SUV until they came to a stop in the 10800 block of Kadota Avenue in Montclair.
Martinez refused to get out of his car, so crisis negotiators tried to deescalate and push for a peaceful surrender for more than an hour.
Martinez then got out of his SUV and moved toward officers while pointing a “dark-colored object” at them and using a “two-handed shooting stance,” police said in a statement. Officials later learned the object appears to be a portable battery pack.
Chino police shot at Martinez and then provided medical aid before he was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Officials didn’t specify how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.
Several departments are investigating the series of events. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and county district attorney’s office are investigating the police shooting, Fontana police are investigating Martinez’s alleged crashing into two Chino police vehicles as an assault with a deadly weapon and Chino police are investigating the initial report of domestic violence and kidnapping.
Chino police will also conduct an administrative investigation to determine if the police shooting was within policy.
Police ask that anyone with information about any of the incidents contact detectives at 909-334-3136.
